International airlines increase capacity into Mexico

Mexico City (BNO NEWS) -- Mexico is developing into a key aviation hub of North America as international airlines are increasing their capacity into the country, the Mexico Tourism Board said on Tuesday.

The Board said international airlines are continuing to build capacity into Mexico due to an increase in demand from international passengers seeking to visit or do business in Mexico, especially in areas which are not or not as much affected by drug-related violence which puts the country in a negative light.

In recent months, local carrier AeroMexico increased their flights in July from Barcelona and Madrid to Mexico City thanks to their code share operations with Air Europa. The Mexican airline has also announced that by the end of the first half of 2011 it will operate new flights between U.S. cities and Mexican cities.

Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, American Eagle and Brazilian carrier TAM have also recently launched or will launch such services in the near future.

During the first quarter of 2011, various European, American, Canadian and Latin American carriers reported notable increases in the number of passengers carried into key Mexican hubs. British Airways, France XL Airways, Avianca, Taca and Sunwing Airlines have shown outstanding levels of increment.

In April 2011, the arrival in Mexico of passengers on international flights increased by 3.8 percent, year on year - which represents an increase of 1,141,159 passengers during the period.

Mexico City International Airport continues to be Latin America's second busiest airport by passenger traffic and the busiest airport by aircraft movements.
