LUSAKA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 34 people were killed on Wednesday after the bus they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck in eastern Zambia, a police spokesperson said.

Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation reported that the fatal road accident occurred early Wednesday morning on the Great East road, 18 kilometers (11 miles) away from Nyimba district. Police Spokesperson Ndandula Siamana said that contrary to the stipulated the bus was overloaded with 88 passengers.

Siamana said that two people, the truck driver and a passenger have been burnt to ashes. She added that the injured passengers were transferred to Nyimba and Petauke District hospitals.

Road accidents are common in the southern African country and are mainly caused by reckless driving, dangerous roads and the poor maintenance of buses which are often overloaded.
