Sonthi backs Yuthasak for Defence portfolio

By The Nation

Matubhum Party leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin on Tuesday voiced support for Pheu Thai MP General Yuthasak Sasiprapha to become the Defence minister.

"Yuthasak is suitable for the job because he is well liked and capable of bridging a divide between the armed forces and the people," he said.

Sonthi, also former junta leader, said his party's two votes in the House will not side with the government or the opposition. The two votes will be cast for or against depending each issue, he said.

Yuthasak is presently a top contender for Defence portfolio after a number of leading military figures turned down the job offer.

Belonging to a powerful clique of Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy Class 8 graduates, Yuthasak is seen as a stauch supporter of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He served as deputy Defence minister in the Thaksin government in 2001.

Following his retirement from the military service, he has been serving as chairman of the Thai Olympic Committee.

After the July 3 vote, he has been the designated representative of Pheu Thai to hold discreet talks with Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha.

SEAWRITE AWARD

Reflections on Thai society

The SeaWrite Award Committee last week announced the seven finalists selected from 83 books submitted for this year's competition, which has the short story as its theme.

The seven-member judging panel was made up of Thanathat Kongthong, Tomorn Sukpreecha, Pariphap Jiraphotirat Sawasdirak, Asst Prof Natanai Prasannam, Assoc Prof Pratheep Muannil, Dr Phichet Sangthong and Dr Ariya Hutinta.

The committee said that despite the diversity of this year's entries, most collections of short stories touch on the social problems that have swept through Thai society of late, with many looking at the political conflicts that have arisen as a result of social divisions. Authors also highlight issues concerning Thai society's capitalist drive for modernity, which is having an impact on urban and rural communities.

In principle, these authors project a broader picture of our troubled society, pointing out that the rural poor continue to be the victims of the inequitable structure of the kingdom's national development scheme.

They also paint pictures of chaotic and turbulence urban life beset by an erosion of human values.

The finalists are as follows:

- "24 Rueng San Khong Fah" ("Fah's 24 Short Stories") by Fah Poolworalak

- "Rueng Khong Rueng" ("The Story of a Story") by Phichet Phopayak

- "Dad Chao Ron Kern Kwa Ja Nung Jip Kafe" ("It's too Hot to Sit Sipping Coffee in the Morning") by Jadej Kamjorndet

- "Kradook Khong Khwam Luang" ("The Bones of Fiction") by Rewat Phanphiphat

- "Nimitwikal" ("A Good Night's Dreams") by Anusorn Tipyanon

- "Bandai Krajok" ("The Glass Stairway") by Wat Yuangkaew

- "Phapayon Thi Thaitham Talodcheewit" ("Real Life Movie") by Chakphan Kangwan

Security authorities and police searched the grounds of Parliament after a hoax call was received, threatening that a bomb was planted there.

However, after an extensive search, the parliament building was cleared of any bomb threat.

A telephone operator at Parliament told police that she received a call from a man claiming that there were bombs planted in six areas of the Parliament building.

The operator also said according to the number displayed on the caller identification, the call was made from a cellphone.

The caller also said that the same information was given to the Dusit Police Station.

Yala public health office Tuesday urged residents to wear face masks when going out of doors to protect themselves from a third round of smoke caused by forest fires in Indonesia.

As the smoke shrouded the Yala sky for the third time this year following two previous occasions in July, Yala public health official Dr Apiwatjaneewong said his office was conducting public relations through a website, community public address system, and brochures handed out at district health stations.

He had instructed hospitals to watch out for an increase in respiratory patients while urging those with asthma, allergies, and lung disease to take special care with their health and wear face masks outdoors.
