Retirement Extension - Joint Bank Account

Featured Replies

Gentlemen

I currently hold a one year retirement extension which will be renewable in March of next year.

I also hold a UK and a Thai bank account in my name only.

Rather than making a Will here in Thailand (I have one in the UK) to transfer my assets to my Thai wife upon my death, would it not be sensible to open a new joint Thai bank account and avoid having to make a Thai Will?

Therefore taking this route, my UK assets namely shares and cash are covered as defined by my UK Will and my Thai assets (only cash in Thai joint bank account) are also covered.

My wife owns her own townhouse outright.

My question is, will immigration accept a Thai joint bank account when applying for my next retirement extension?

Regards

No they will not.

Has to be in your name only.

They used to accept it if you had double the 800,000 balance but not any more as far as I know.

Have two accounts and transfer required amount to your name only for the required 3 month period and back to joint account for remainder of the year. Be sure she knows where the atm card is and pin when using the your name only account.

Thanks Lite Beer and Lopburi.

I must be slow this morning, and yes Lopburi I will take your route and therefore there will be no need for me making a Thai Will. I hope that I do not die on the day the money is transferred.

Thanks again gentlemen.

or I should say, during the 3 months that the money is in my sole account.

Be sure she knows where the atm card is and pin when using the your name only account.

Or, put all single and joint accounts into one internet bank account (we do this with Bangkok Bank, and transfers between accounts are instantaneous with a few key strokes.)

Then, revise checklist:

1. Bury Bob

2. Transfer funds to joint account

3. Party

:D

Surely it would be illegal for the wife to withdraw money using the ATM card from the OP's named account after he is dead! unsure.gif

Much better wife (who is going to inherent by posters explanation) have atm access in case of medical emergency. The money will go to her after death as next of kin.

Yes, I agree. That way would keep it all above board and legal!
