MUMBAI, INDIA (BNO NEWS) – A cargo ship with tons of various combustible materials sank off the Mumbai harbor on Thursday morning, the Indian Express reported on Friday.

The vessel had a cargo of 60,054 tons of coal, 290 tons of fuel oil and 50 tons of diesel oil, and was on its way from Lubuk Tutung in Indonesia to Dahej in the Indian western state of Gujarat. 30 crew members of the bulk carrier were airlifted after the Jordanian captain called for assistance around 7 a.m. local time, the report said.

The Indian Navy and Coast Guard are coordinating the rescue and relief effort and one of its vessels is now patrolling the area to monitor pollution, though there is no report of any leakage so far.

The owners, the manager and the ship's agents have been served with a statutory notice under the Merchant Shipping Act.

According to the Directorate General of Shipping, the vessel built in 1984 is owned and managed by the Qatar-based Delta Shipping Marine Services. While efforts to salvage the ship continued till afternoon, the ship had finally sunk by midday.

The causes of the sinking were not reported by the Indian Express.
