I've realised my card may not be equipped with a 'fan controller chip', I'm using an ATI Radeon HD5450...

After you deselect Auto and move the fan speed slider up did you hit the Apply button. My card is an ATI Radeon 4890 and the speed control works fine.

If you have installed the AMD Catalyst software that should have come with the card you can start the Catalyst software and under Performance > AMD Overdrive it has a speed fan option.

//edit - just saw your photos. Mine is also an HIS branded graphics card.

//edit2 - HD5450 is the GPU (Graphics processor chip) and can be packaged many different ways by different manufacturers adding additional features such as more memory, more 'lanes', different clock rates etc. so no surprise about a different appearance.

Panic over with regards to being ripped off then! :)

I did click the 'Apply' button, you can see it is no longer lit up in my screen shot, the catalyst software didn't change a thing either :(

Don't you think this looks a bit strange?

Well, if you still have the card out try starting the computer with it out and see if the sound is still there. ;)

I was going to do that but I wanted to ask if there would be any lengthy software changes I would need to make when I reinstalled it?

No because the system probably won't get past the BIOS tests so you will probably get a BIOS beep complaining about the graphics card. But, the PSU, CPU and other fans will run normally so will be able to hear them.

//edit - unless you have onboard VGA also and enable it.

I do yes, on my Asus MoBo, thankfully!

And apart from my screen being very bloated because I'm waiting for the original Asus display drivers to load, there's nothing to complain about - it sounds like a 3 week old PC again, that card both makes an incredible amount of noise and drains the PSU as that was groaning too! It's 500w too :(

Something is weird then as that is not a high performance card and should have little impact on the power supply. The below is my HIS 4890 Turbo (overclocked and power hungry) version and I have a high end main board (i7) 3 drives and a 550W PS with no issues.

The HD5450 cards I've seen are 'fanless'

Some are and some aren't. For example the XFX 5450 is nearly identical to his HIS and has a fan but many if not most are passive cooled.

Ive never heard of a high end main board (i7), usually they are classified by their sockets and I have yet to see (or hear) of an i7 socket board.

Jeez, I was referring to the CPU base of the mainboard which is obviously a LGA1155 socketed board, in my case an i7-2600K and Sandy Bridge chipset. Didn't see the need to spell it out.

I'm taking this piece of <deleted> back tomorrow.

Believe that is a valid choice if it is loading the PS that much, something seems wrong.

I paid B1,800 for it and I'm quite sure the bloke in the shop will take it back, he's taken everything else back that's been sold to me in error...

I'm now wondering if it's worth me chucking an extra thousand or two for a proper decent card in the hope it won't just duplicate what this card is done.

The shop refunded for the card which I find amazing, and commendable of course!

Now I'm thinking about what to get, I'm wary of noisy cards now so has anybody got a quiet one that copes well? I ask this because when I took the card back they tested it with a game, I didn't note the name of the game, but they just played the demo movie for the game and it was rather jumpy! I would have been pretty pissed off if I'd tried to play a game and it had done that!

As posted in your other thread, I have a HIS Radeon HD 5670. If you're looking for card that's quiet, performs well, and has low power requirements, this is it. I've had this card for several months now, no complaints. But hey, don't take my word for it -- just read the reviews. :)

I had noted your recommendations before Supernova, thanks :)

I checked out current western prices for the 5670 and they are around £50, so should I expect to pay around B2,500 here? The card I just took back was priced the same here as in the west so I'm making my assumptions that way...

The 5670 (Asus) is listed on InvadeIt's website for Bt.2850.00, shopping around at Pantip might yield a slightly lower price.

Got myself this card back in April for Bt2800. I'm sure prices have dropped since then.

On your link HIS don't list Thailand as a distro site, maybe tell the OP where in Thailand you got it for that price so he can go look.

Prices for HIS cards can be found at jib.co.th. Left side column under VGA cards click on PCI-E ( ATI ) 1 GB.

I see, now 110b cheaper, does JIB actually have stock though ?

Probably would need to contact them to verify first. I believe j.i.b is a main distributor to various outlets. Clicking on the top right menu item, contact, shows a long list of stores they distribute to.

Thanks for your recommendations, however I've decided against getting a card for the time-being, I'm going to stop while I'm ahead!

I unsoldered the fan LEDs on my case and swapped the grill on the front of the case with NOX on it for a spare which was included in the box, I also unscrewed the plexiglas windows and screwed them back onto the back of the panel so now my case is quiet and subtle and minimal, just how I like it :)
