HOHHOT, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- Seven teenagers drowned in a reservoir in northern China on late Sunday afternoon, state-run media reported on Tuesday. Few details were immediately released.

The incident happened at around 4.45 p.m. on Sunday when staff heard screams at the Budong River Reservoir in Shangdu county of China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous region. Seven high school students were taking a swim at the time, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Xinhua said a major rescue operation was immediately launched which involved more than 140 police officers and firefighters. But it took them more than two hours to find the victims, who were transported to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The report did not mention the exact ages of the victims or explain what caused the group to drown.
