Street brawl in southern Russia leaves 7 dead

MAKHACHKALA, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- Seven people were killed on early Tuesday morning during a street brawl between two groups of people in Russia's southern region of Dagestan, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported on Wednesday.

The report said the brawl began during the early hours of Tuesday morning near a filling station about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the settlement of Untsukul. Two groups of young men reportedly became involved in the fight which eventually escalated into a shooting, killing seven people including a young girl.

The groups which were involved in the clash were all residents of the villages of Gimry and Untsukulov, which are both in the district of Untsukulsky. Several people were arrested during the unrest and have been charged with murder and illegally carrying weapons

"The reasons for the conflict are being established. According to preliminary details the fight arose from personal conflict [as opposed to premeditated criminality]," the police said, as cited by ITAR-TASS. The region of Dagestan has been known to regularly experience violence from both street brawls and terrorism.

Islamic extremist groups have carried out two violent separatist wars in Chechnya during the past 20 years, and security forces believe their terrorist activities have spread to its neighboring Dagestan.
