I have tried to get directions to drive to Cha-Am from Chiang Mai, avoiding Bangkok, but it seems that when I tried Mapquest they bring me into Bangkok.

Can someone please give me detailed instructions on which roads to use? And, how long should it take?

Thank you very much in advance.

Try this....... http://maps.google.com

First type Thailand into the top to change maps,

Then click on "get directions" on the left,

Enter from and to and it will give you all you need

The route goes around the edge of Bangkok, there is a zoom facility for the map and step by step instructions on the left.

The way I normally go is Petchburi-Nakhon Pathom-Kampaeng Saen-Uthong- Suphanburi-Chainat-Nakhon Sawan-Lampang-Chiangmai.

Probably take about 9 hours driving.

Yes buy a map by all means then you can write down your destinations and the highway road number, sign posting is sometimes a bit misleading, on the ( Highway 11 ) out from Chiangmay get onto the ( H 1 ) it's sign posted all the way to Bangkok, you sort avoid Bangkok as in such you will be staying on the outskirts of it.

When you get to Nackered Swan, all roads go there :) follow the signs to carry you on to the ( H 32 ) signposted to Ayutthaya.

I usually turn off there and go Chainat and get onto the ( Road 340 ) a really good road connecting with the ( H 9 ) near Nonthaburi.

Anyhow after Ayutthaya turn off right onto ( H 9 ) until you come to the turn off for ( H 35 ) towards Samut Sakhon and heading to the

( H 4) Phetchaburi South direction, when on the ( H 4 ) if you miss Cha Am you shouldn't be driving. :D

I use Google maps and find them quite good. Follow the Hwy towards Bkk (Hwy Nos change a couple of times) when you pass Ayuthiya (Quite a way) keep a lookout for ring road 9 turn left on the ramp and right when you get to the T junction. (left will take you to Pattaya). Use a map to get to Cha Am. If you want to do it in one day leave Chiangmai early so you get through Bangkok in daylight. About 8 hrs to Bkk and another 3-4 to Cha Am with stops. Road works can be a problem sometimes. Don't know if they have finished between Bkk and Cha Am.

Happy trails

Avoiding BKK is a MUST if you want to reached fast. My last driving trip, from Sg to CMai is a breeze. It's ONLY the Bkk part confused me even though with an updated GPS.

Look for Pinklao and Bang Bua Tong, hit to Ayutthaya directions............. visit my Blog and hope this help!
