A young girl sizes up a huge replica pineapple on display at last year's event. PHUKET: -- The annual Phuket Pineapple and Flower Fair is now underway at Saphan Hin Park in Phuket Town. Organized by the Phuket Provincial Agricultural Office, Phuket City Municipality and the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization, this year’s fair will feature exhibitions of Phuket Pineapple (called yanat in the local southern Thai dialect), pineapple peeling and processing competitions, and flower decoration contests. Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha presided over the opening ceremony on Tuesday. The show was renamed last year to become a “pineapple festival” to further boost the image of the island’s namesake fruit, Gov Tri said. Gardeners from all 14 southern provinces are taking part in the event, one the largest of its kind in the region and now in its 19th year. Various kinds of flowers, potted plants, pineapples, food, souvenirs and gardening supplies will be on sale at the show over the weekend and until the show closes on Thursday night. There will also be nightly performances and a wide variety of food and beverages. For more information, call 076-212188 or 076-216565.
