Renewed Israeli air raids kill Gaza militant after militants break cease fire

2011-08-25 07:48:40 GMT+7 (ICT)

GAZA CITY (BNO NEWS) -- New Israeli air raids on Wednesday killed one Palestinian militant and injured two others in the Gaza Strip, officials said. The strikes come after militants broke the previously announced cease fire.

A spokesperson for the Israeli military said an aircraft from the Israel Air Force (IAF) targeted an Islamic Jihad militant identified as 34-year-old Zadi Ismail Asmar. The spokesman alleged he was involved in smuggling weapons to Gaza and in militant activity in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

According to the Palestine News Network, Palestinian medical services reported that two people were injured during the air strike. Staff of Abu Yousef Al Najjar hospital also said they received a body and identified him as Ismail Asmar.

Later on Wednesday, IAF aircraft also targeted two militants who had fired rockets at Israel from two separate locations in the northern Gaza Strip, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces. It was not immediately known if they were killed.

On Monday, Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group which governs the Gaza strip, agreed to a ceasefire after five days of cross-border violence. A Palestinian official said that Hamas had agreed to ensure the ceasefire would be recognized by smaller militant groups in Gaza, but nonetheless the cease fire was broken within hours as militants fired new rockets.

The truce came after eight Israelis were killed in the Negev desert near the Red Sea resort town of Eliat on August 18. Seven of the attackers and five Egyptian security personnel were killed as Israeli troops pursued the suspected gunmen.

Looks like the quick jihadists can't even be bothered waiting till September.

Israel-Egyptian frontier units went on peak alert Wednesday night, Aug. 24, following specific intelligence that Palestinian Jihad Islami was preparing to launch another cross-border terrorist attack on Israel from Sinai.

To relate this to the ceasefire being broken groups other than Hamas are looking for a fight either via Gaza or direct from Sinai, probably close to both in the hope of dragging Egypt into this.

I have just read two conflicting reports on this situation, I am sure there are others. These reports were Palestinian and Egyptian I'm tired of it and don't really care who is right. Simply rely on "motive" and "opportunity" and you will be right the vast majority of the time.

In order for the Israelis to find these people, some Egyptians and Palestinians with knowledge are sharing info. Despite what we see in public, my hunch is that some people enjoy good working relationships.
