China rejects Pentagon report about its military development

BEIJING (BNO NEWS) -- The Chinese Ministry of National Defense on Friday voiced its firm opposition against the Pentagon's annual report on China's military development, calling on the U.S. government to stop making such reports.

Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said its government voices "strong dissatisfaction" and "resolute opposition" to the report, which China believes distorts the facts. He said the report turned a blind eye to facts and brings up the alleged Chinese "military threat" against Taiwan, and makes "groundless claims" about China's policies on space and network security.

Yang said China's defense building "is solely to safeguard its own sovereignty and territorial integrity, and ensure smooth economic and social development, and does not target any country." Yang added: "Given the progress of science and technology, it's normal for the Chinese army to develop and renew some weapons and equipment."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu also voiced its firm opposition to the newly-released annual report. "It is an irresponsible act which does no good to enhance China-U.S. strategic trust," he said.

Ma also defended China's national defense policy, saying that the country is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asian-Pacific region and the world at large. "China develops limited armed forces purely for the purpose of safeguarding independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," Ma said.

The report, titled "Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China," was released by the U.S. Department of Defense on August 24. The report recognized that China has made "modest, but incremental, improvements in the transparency of its military and security affairs," while alleging "uncertainty about how China will use its growing capabilities."

The Pentagon report, submitted to the U.S. Congress by the Pentagon annually pursuant to a U.S. law since 2000, drew protest from China over its interfering nature, distortion of facts and baseless speculations. "We urge the U.S. to stop making so-called 'China's Military and Security Developments Reports", and do more conducive things to bilateral military relations, not vice versa," Yang added.

I agree, but the attempted holding of this report from the public and similar documents would probably be a lost cause. Security of info/communication seems to be a rapidity disappearing trait of most governments.
