Back In Los With My New Garmin 3750

Featured Replies

Hi,

Last time I checked, Garmin offered the map download of Thailand from it's website for $US 99.

Is this my best route to get the map, or is there a different way which can save me some $?

Thanks.

I wasted the money buying the Southeast Asia map from the Garmin web site. I used it once and then deleted it. The ESRI Thailand map is MUCH better and cheaper. You can get it here;

http://eaglegps.org/

Be sure that you get the latest version, which is V11.1. The cost is 2,000 baht.

You should be aware that your foreign purchased nuvi 3750 does not have the Thai OS; therefore, certain map features such as Junction View may not work with the ESRI V11.1 Thailand Street Map. Be sure you clearly understand what to expect before you pay the 2,000 baht.

I'm actually working with Garmin about their SEA version being so bad. I've sent them over a dozen errors now that their map Ver 6.5 has. They just sent me Ver 7.0 of the map. Give me a few days to see if it's any better. I really blasted them on their product and one of the leads in their mapping section has contacted me. He too is now frustrated with the old program and says the new one out is greatly improved. We'll see...like I said I have a dozen or more errors to compare too. I'm running simulations with it which is something anyone can do. And I have the ESRI version too.

One thing I have discovered is you need to make sure both the Garmin firmware and your map software are up to date. All are free download's at the respective website. Just follow their instructions.

Sounds good. Any problems with Junction view (although you may have the Thai OS on your Garmin)? I'm a little worried per InnocentObserver's post about Junction view possibly not working on my USA purchased 3750. Seems like although not a necessity Junction view would be useful and helpful to have.

I've got about 2 weeks before we are taking to the road and want 3750 to be working, so I'll hold off awhile to hear your evaluation of V7.0. Unless people here say the ESRI is best for me in any event.

Please let us know what you find out.

You need to contact ESRI Customer Care and ask them if they can install their V11.1 map on your US purchased nuvi 3750. Get the V11.1 map on microSD memory card to preserve your original maps.

My Nuvi 855 has junction view capability but neither the SEA nor the ESRI junction view functions for Thailand work.

The ESRI has an English version that you can download for free. I've downloaded it buy have gotten around to try it. So far the Garmins Ver 7 is better than 6.5 and has more map details but I'm not done evaluating it yet. I going to places where I know the roads and conditions and see how far off they are.

OK, so far I have run simulations on only four of the 12 errors I reported to Garmin. I'm comparing V 6.5 with the new Ver 7 they sent me. The simulations run "real time" so it's slow going. My results so far are fairly impressive. The new version actually has more graphic detail than the older version. It gives good directions however you need to be alert to the fact it does not always take you the best route. If you need to take say a left turn to another highway, it has a tendency to have you travel on a frontage road to far in advance before the turn. It'll have you leave the expressway to soon where as you could have travel a little farther to exit the expressway. But it does get you there. It would be wise to run a simulation on any trip first so you know what the unit may try to tell you do. Or take my approach, hell I'm here, let's explore, I have the time.

Haven't tried several other errors yet but am working on them as time permits. I really can't recommend either program because that's not my intention. The ESRI has a English version I have not tried yet but the Thai versions works just fine except looking up places are in Thai not English. Anyone else with the ESRI English version care to comment?

I have been informed that the Highway 7 interchange with Highway 3 (Sukhumvit Road) in Pattaya is still not correct on the SEA V7 map, despite being open for almost two years. A major oops.

I have ESRI v11.1 [DUAL Language] on my Nuvi 2575 and the lookup in English works quite well, only when I load the map via BaseCamp I get everything in Thai Language and can't change it.

I just reported it to Garmin a minute ago. I'm doping so much for them they need to hire me!!

Just connect the GPS to your PC with the Supplied USB Cable (Select Mass Storage Mode on the GPS) and start BaseCamp.

BaseCamp should read the Map from your Garmin unit and display it. You then can create custom routes and Waypoints which you can send to your Garmin. (it's faster and more detailed then using for example the Route Planner in the Garmin itself)

Note this is how it works for me and my Nuvi 2575.

But aren't we getting Off Topic ?

Thanks for that. I just haven't had time to play with it. Now I will. In fact now I can download my routes I had trouble with and send that to Garmin.

Actually, if your Garmin specifications say "Routes: 0" then you cannot download and save routes from your computer.

You make a very good point IO, but then you are still be able to save Waypoints, And that is still easier with BaseCamp vs GPS (In my case 32" Monitor instead of a 5" GPS Screen

(BTW: I looked at the specs of my 2575 and it says Routes: 100)

It is possible (and perfectly legal) to install the Thai/Sing/Malaysia firmware on a non-Thai Garmin GPS - if you are willing to take the (small) risk of bricking your unit.

Suggest you google "noeman.org" if you want to proceed.

Thai junction view requires the Thai OS (firmware), where and how a GPS user gets it is up to them.

Does anyone know if the ESRI Thailand Street Map V11.1 and foreign Garmin Nuvi 37XX units compatibility problem has been fixed?

I have 2 Nuvi 3760's both using V10.1. 6 months ago the ESRI map supplier I dealt with couldn't load V11.1 due to this problem.

OK, I finished running all the simulations on the previous version 6.5 errors and reported back to Garmin. They still have a few problems to solve. Haven't received a reply but so far Ver 7.0 is a major improvement. Now that only goes as far as running a simulation. Unless I travel back to those places in real time will I actually know if the newer version is any better and that isn't going to happen for awhile.

So which is better? Sorry, I can't say one way or the other at this point. I can tell you Ver 7.0 is a step up and is much better, and with the many corrections I suggested to them, the update should also be better. But of course only if they make the changes. One suggestion is to speed up the simulation. Running at real time is very time consuming.

I think the Jomtien Soi numbers being mixed up is unforgivable and is a deal breaker for me. I suggested to Garmin that they show highway 7 connecting to highway 3 in mid Pattaya prior to the V6.5 update. Before I bought V6.5 I was assured that that intersection WAS shown on V6.5. It was NOT shown and V7.0 still isn't updated. I won't waste any more time with their map errors because they no longer bother to even reply to my suggestions. Their customer support stinks. My last email to Garmin stated and pointed out that V.7.0 has more problems than V6.5. No answer. Their web site says all emails will be answered within three days. The large Jomtien Thani Hotel and Immigration are both on Soi 5 Jomtien. V.7.0 shows the hotel on Soi 6 and Immigration isn't shown at all. Soi 6 is in fact a dead end.

Thanks everybody. I was tending to pass on Garmin in light of the highway 3 and 7 problem which seems incredible hasn't as of yet been resolved. Now reading this reply from Mrjlh my decision is now clinched. I'm going with ESRI.

Hi everybody...

I dont know if this is any use to anyone, but I just bought myself a new Garmin Nuvi 3790v (Thai version) It came loaded up with Thailand DEM, Thailand Streetmap v12.0 NT 3D, Malsingmaps Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei NT 2011.30 and Thailand Streetmap v12.01 NT [Dual] All. Now, I am not a technophile by any stretch of the imagination and even I have figured out how to work it (coz all the blidy instructions etc are of course only in Thai...!!) I live out in the sticks up in Isaan and so far its taken me successfully to a whole bunch of places in both Korat and Khon Kaen....just punch in the place name....... including shops (I thought that was amazin'...) and press go. It also knows all of the little streets out in the village. Brilliant. I've yet to give it a test drive down in the big smoke, but I'm sure it will be fine there too. I'm in touch with Garmin just now to try and get all of the instructions etc in English to see if there's anything else I can do with it, but so far, I'm really chuffed with it. :)
