Target Of Chain E-Mails Not Mollified By Apology

Target of chain e-mails not mollified by apology

By The Nation on Sunday

A Channel 7 reporter who became the victim of a hate campaign by the red shirts said yesterday that she would not withdraw her police complaint despite an apology from a woman claiming to have started the chain e-mail drive.

Somjit Nawakruasunthorn said that she wanted the case to be a lesson for anyone who would violate other people's rights or the law. "It's easy for them to say they are sorry and had no intention to do so," she said. "If she was more respectful of the law and other people's rights, things like this would not happen."

Somjit was referring to Pornthip Paksanont, chief of a red-shirt group in Phetchaburi province. Pornthip has admitted to sending the chain e-mail messages criticising the reporter for asking Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra some aggressive questions. Part of the e-mail said, "Remember her look. Wherever you find her, help me take care of her."

Somjit said yesterday that she suspected there were some people behind Pornthip's hate campaign against her. She said that judging from the words used in the e-mail, it was possible that the writer was a man, and not a woman. On Thursday, the reporter filed a complaint with police regarding the threat against her.

The reporter said that it had become more difficult for media professionals to do their duty at a time of severe conflict in the country. She called on management of media organisations and professional groups to come up with appropriate measures to protect media workers against a threat similar to the one directed at her.

"There should be more protection, in addition to issuing statements criticising such acts. It's not enough for media workers to protect their rights alone," she said.

Good for you, Somjit.

Don't let the intimidation go un-addressed.

,

Fancy that, a reporter asking the Prime Minister "aggressive?" questions?

I always thought that was what a reporter was supposed to do.

Maybe the reporter should ask the P.M. what her favorite designer brand is instead. Wouldn't want to put Yingluck on the spot with anything political..

Good luck with the proceedings with the police.

Anyone care to defend this behavior?

Anyone care to defend this behavior?

Someone did seem to suggest it was OK "because they apologised" ...
