Having become used to using generics rather than expensive branded versions of medications while living in India, I am wondering as to availability of generics in BKK - and where to find them in Sukhumvit area?

With the exception of new drugs still under patent, most common drugs are available here in a locally made generic equiavelent. you can get them at any proper pharmacy (but not, often ,the pharmacy sections of chains like Boots and Watsons) , just ask by generic name.

By "proper" pharmacy I mean one actually staffed by a trained pharmacist which is rarer than one might think. It's pretty easy to tell...these will be large air-conditioned pharmacies with a white coated person behind the counter who immediately recognizes grugs by their generic name . You may need to write it down due to their difficulty understanding your accent, but they'll immediately know what you mean when they see the written generic name. If you get blank looks and questions like "what is it for", chances are the person you are dealing with is not actually a pharamcist. Try a different place until you find one that has a real pharmacist and the rest is smooth sailing.
