The Democrats must be prepared to take the lead in moving Thailand forward in the long run, as the current government is focused solely on satisfying people's immediate desires, a party seminar heard.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said the Democrats must work harder on the party's political strategies; public relations; monitoring and following up on policies; and formulating alternative policies.

Deputy leaders Apirak Kosayodhin, Chuti Krairiksh, Korn Chatikavanij and opposition chief whip Jurin Laksanawisit, respectively, were put in charge of these tasks.

The setting up of a shadow cabinet to follow the government's work would be discussed on Tuesday, Abhisit said.

Speaking after the two-day seminar in Phitsanulok, Abhisit said the Democrats must aim for fair and steady economic growth while ensuring that people receive good welfare, life security and political rights according to democracy.

The government's performance in the first month pointed to problems in the future, especially its attempt to divide people and assume all the power for itself, Abhisit said.

The Democrat Party has to collaboration more closely with civic networks representing various groups, Abhisit said. Although it has not done well in communicating with people, it would not found its own television station, as this is legally prohibited. Instead, it would make use of new media and other channels to reach out to people, he said.

"Deputy party leaders and those who communicate with local people must provide monthly reports, in addition to the examination by the evaluation committee," he said.

After the seminar, Abhisit and the MPs paid homage to Phra Buddha Chinaraj, the famous sacred Buddha image of the province. The abbot of the Phra Sri Ratana Mahathat Temple, where the Buddha image is housed, suggested to Abhisit possible solution's to the flooding problems in Phitsanulok and nearby provinces. He told Abhisit to "be bold" in his administration if he gets the chance to become the prime minister again

Thank God someone cares about Thailand and not just to increase their own wealth...what a pity Abhisit had his hands tied with that coalition or corruption... If only ...if only...

The Dems need new blood and new ideas to become viable. All the same old leaders form the same old internal power structures reporting to the same old committess controlled by the same old people isnt a model for success.

They just saw their portion of the vote drop a couple of million after overseeing the biggest debt funded bunch of handouts the country has ever seen, having stuffed every bureaucratic position with their and their allies people, having physically wiped out most of their opponents media and any opportunity to have access to state media and being up against a party that everyone knows is led by a dude the courts have convicted, a party supported by a group the whole media had shown burning all kinds of places down, a party led by a poltical novice, a party that was actually a sinister organization that the CRES had "linked" to things that it shouldnt be linked to. How if they cant win under those circumstances do they think they can win without massive internal change and reform?

Would you back that statement with a compare and contrast of the present administration, or are you basing that statement on the fact that PTP have no intention of honouring their election promises?

That's straight off the RA website, isn't it?

It is the role of decent leaders to help the people rise above themselves, not to pander to all that is base in them.

Wow, how about some perspective here - the party gets together for a 2 day meeting, comes out, and this is what they have to say... when just 63 days ago, they were the ruling party in the government.

I mean, OK, a lot of TVFers like this party, but this is The Nation, meaning this is the "positive spin" on the Dem's srtategy ... aren't you guys just a wee bit embarrassed?

just a remark - it seems almost assured that some one will request justification, proof, links, references, etc, whenever a less that favorable comment is delivered about the Dems, where as I find it very rarely the case (in fact I can't recall even one, myself) that some one demands the same when a negative comment is posted about the UDD or the PTP...

Does anyone have the same feeling, or, perhaps, know why that is?

Abhisit knows Democrats need to get out there and reach the electorate, educate and shift the entrenched voter who will just carry on voting the same way, especially if no suitable alternative is evident, or the voters remain unaware.

The last election should after all offer the democrats hope. They carried a good percentage of the vote, despite I believe suffering loss of support due to events during their tenure

The question must be, are the playmakers who previously supported the Democrats ready for the more balanced society Abhisit suggests, be interesting would it not, if jetisoned by their high level power base, the democrats became the party of the people .....:)

Does anyone have the same feeling, or, perhaps, know why that is?

It could be for a number of reasons.

1) The negative comment posted about the UDD / PTP is obvious or has been well documented already.

2) The negative comment posted about the Democrats is just red propaganda with no basis or hasn't been well documented.

3) Red supporting posters are too scared to ask for verification, probably because they expect the statement to be true, or don't want it proven to be true.

I'm sure there are other reasons too.

5) Raises a question mark against against the post without having to supply any evidence to counter the content

Regarding handouts, the Democrats didn't try to fool the people during the election, making wild promises they couldn't fulfill, they said they would raise the minimum wage in 2 stages, not 300 baht nationwide instantly, a lie that is coming back to haunt Pheau Thai.

What positions did the Democrats 'stuff' with their people? Pumjaithai yes, but I don't see much evidence of the Democrats doing that, they didn't oversee the Interior Ministry.

Regarding state media, Apisit offered airtime to Pheua Thai to counter his Sunday programme, but they didn't take it up.

The red magazines continued to publish during the Democrat's tenure and several newspapers published both pro and anti red articles.

The political novice was backed by the de facto leader, you know as well as I that Yinglak would never had won if she wasn't Thaksin's sister.

The Democrats offered realistic policies to the electorate but Pheua Thai promised the earth, knowing the majority in Issan and the north would fall for it. And now Pheua Thai are upset at having to pay out for flood victims.
