Gps On Smart Phones In Cm

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any recommendations for a smart phone with GPS that works well in CM? I am especially interested in saving coordinates while hiking in the jungle and being able to reproduce a map later on a PC. Are you much better using a standalone GPS device? Any information is appreciated.

Take a look at pathaway. I used to use it on a Palm.

i use a older nokia 5800 (has built in GPS antenna) with the software for Nokia symbian made by Sports Tracker. This software is available for free from OVi store(nokia). Does the job. No internet needed while using it until you are finished and ready to upload to the server back home.

Any smartphone with a GPS can do the job, however continuous usage drains the battery pretty quickly (like in 5 hours or so, depending on the battery capacity). So if u plan to go away for days or u need to track your location all the time, u're probably better off with a standalone device. Also it comes with a software, so u don't have the hassle with that, and the GPS unit is typically stronger in those (finds sats faster and more precise location, although the latter is usually not a problem). Also, smartphones quite often have problems with the GPS. So far I've had 2 smartphones, neither were reliable enough, and I'm not just unlucky.
