If I apply for a tourist visa to Thailand, do I need a purchased plane ticket first?

And if I apply in NY, could I get a 60 or 90 day tourist visa so that I wouldn't have to leave the country every 30 days?

This probably should be moved to the visa section for a better response.

There is no 90 day Tourist Visa, you would apply for a single entry or double entry Tourist Visa, each allows an entry of 60 days and each stay can be extended for 30 days for 1900 Baht. You would just need to do a border run if you wanted stay longer than 90 days.

Contact the consulate for their requirements concerning airline tickets, etc.

Check with your local consulate, but you can use others by mail. Portland is visa friendly. Just give her a call and see what she wants

There is the single-entry tourist visa valid for travel to Thailand within 90 days from its issue date. Strangely, ThaiVisa members commonly refer to it as a 60-day visa, with reference to the period of permission to stay granted by Thai immigration upon arrival with this visa, but they refer to the multiple-entry non-O visa as a one-year visa, with reference to the period for which it is valid for travel to Thailand. We just have to live with these inconsistencies.
