i have to go to Cambodia soon and am wondering where in cm can i get us dollars obviously they have to be pristine and i would

like them to be in different denominations or should i change thai baht in cambodia for us dollars

Banks in Chiang Mai, according to a lot of postings on TV, seem to give lower exchange rates in the circumstance you seem to be describing.

One place which is said to be good is on Charoen Phratet, near the smaller bridge south of the bridge leading to Sankamphaeng. My wife uses this place, and I will be using it soon.

I 2nd thaimiller's recommendation. But I have found it is best to call a day in advance and order your currency; especially if you are looking for bank notes in particular denominations. The last 3-4 times I just turned up they did not have what I needed and I had to order and make a 2nd trip.

Bring your original passport! They don't accept photocopies anymore.

It's not always easy to use Riel and as you say, at over 4,000 to the dollar it takes up space. Most Cambodians prefer dollars and now even a lot of the little shops quote their prices in dollars and don't want Riel from foreigners. Take dollars and change $20 into Riel and then on a needs be basis.

Yes, you're right about that and rounding it off. The secret is to take lots of small dollar denominations, plenty of $1 bills and if they round it off so be it, you can't lose much.

Better to have a case full of $1 bills than a case full of Riel.

I've bought 800 US dollars there before. I've heard from others who have purchased large amounts there too. This was about a year ago.

I use their ATM machines and get US Money from them. I go only to Phnom Phen and Siem Reap . Other towns I don't know about. I can not remember seeing any thing priced in Cambodian money for over a dollar.

same experience as of 3 years ago. I did have to pay an ATM fee which my schwab debit card reimbursed.

I got $3000 USD from the Kasikornbank close to Riders corner last year.

on a side note, exchange rates are adjusted twice per day.

Normally what you have to look for are machines that take PLUS, PULSE or CIRRUS. One of them should be on the back of your card, if it is a PLUS it will work.

Only if you request Thai currency from the ATM machine.

Seriously, I forgot if I paid a fixed amount or a percentage although $2 comes to mind. It's irrelevant now since any fees might not be the same today. Check google or lonely planet for information on Cambodia atms.
