AFAIK only Air Madagascar's ageing Boeing 767s (banned from Europe over safety concerns) fly this route from Guangzhou with a stopover in Bangkok.

Any recent updates on Madagascar as a tourist destination? Thanks.

I would stir clear of any relationship with Air Mad, as they've quite a nasty and consistent reputation.

A number of reputable carriers fly into Tana - Air France, SAA, KLM, et al. - but connections from Asian points might be difficult to find. I believe Air Mauritius has direct Bangkok to Tana flight with a Mauritius stopover.

It's almost worthy to fly to Europe or Africa first. Most of the dependable routes and carriers are coming from this direction.

There are a few French sub-airlines that fly within the Franco-influenced Indian Ocean to Europe and perhaps Asia [Corsair, Air Austral, etc].

By all means.....Madagascar is one of those [still today] out-of-the-way destinations that many just don't know about. Depending on one's interests, you could easily spend a year or two just exploring the never-ending fascinating aspects of the "Red Isle".

Yes and the most fabulous woman I ever met in my life was from Madascar. I met her in Paris. She could dance, she was beautiful. I will never forget her and always wanted to go to her country

I have several friends who have been to Madagascar in the past 3 year. Some have gone more than once and all had a great time so it sounds like it's a great destination.

As for Air Mad, I can't tell you what it's like now but if you remind me in about 6 weeks I'll give you a full report. I'm scheduled to spend November there.

The problems with Air Austral are:

1. 15 hour layover on the way to Madagascar and 5 on the way back. That's fine if you want to spend time in Reunion. Air Mad is nonstop to Madagascar.

2. the international flight is 40% more expensive on Air austral.

3. If you fly internationally with Air Mad they offer a 50% discount on the domestic flights. I have four domestic flights booked. The total cost of the trip on Air Austral would be double the cost on Air Mad.

Air Madagascar has been approved by the EU to fly to Europe. That's a good enough safety recomendation for me. Air Austral may be a better airline in terms of service (meals, in-flight entertainment, etc) but that's a huge price difference to pay.

Sorry to disappoint you but Air Madagascar, on having its 2 Boeing 767s banned from EU airspace after repeated warnings, merely re-assigned them to other international routes. Dreadful attitude! If my car has something wrong I get it fixed, pronto.

They quote 50% off domestic flights if booked out-of-country with your international ticket. It drops to 40% off if booked in Madagascar. However I've seen reports that the surcharge component of domestic tickets is not discounted, reducing the net figure to only 20-25% off. Can anyone confirm this?
