Thai ex-PM meets Cambodian leader

PHNOM PENH, September 17, 2011 (AFP) - Former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra met Cambodia's premier in Phnom Penh Saturday for the first time since his sister took power in Thailand, but an official said politics was not on the agenda.

Thaksin, who was ousted from power in 2006 and lives abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption, arrived early Saturday morning, shortly after his sibling Yingluck Shinawatra concluded her first official visit to Cambodia.

A smiling Thaksin embraced the Cambodian leader Hun Sen on Saturday morning and said he was happy to see him before the pair held closed-door talks at the government's Peace Building in the capital.

"As I remember they did not talk about politics," Hun Sen's spokesman Eang Sophalleth told AFP of the meeting.

Thaksin, who remains a controversial and deeply divisive figure in Thailand, is due to play golf with Hun Sen and address senior officials on economics during his trip.

The former telecoms tycoon remains close to Hun Sen, who has called him an "eternal friend", and even briefly acted as Cambodia's economics adviser -- inflaming tensions with the then Thai government.

Thaksin is accused by the opposition of being heavily involved in decisions by the government, which played on the fugitive former leader's continuing popularity to secure a landslide win in July elections.

He avoided seeing Yingluck in Cambodia.

Yingluck's Thursday talks with Hun Sen marked an improvement in ties between Thailand and Cambodia after deadly border clashes broke out earlier this year near an ancient temple on their shared border.

The leaders said they had agreed to redeploy troops away from the disputed area after the meeting.

The Hague-based International Court of Justice in July asked both nations to withdraw military personnel from around the Preah Vihear temple complex, but neither side has pulled out yet, though the border has been calm.

Ms. Yingluck left Cambodia late Thursday and spent some time in Laos on Friday. K. Thaksin arrived in Cambodia Saturday morning. I think Ms. Yingluck is aware that as PM she has to be a bit careful in relation to clear contact with her brother. For the UDD MPs who are on a private trip to greet their leader it's a bit less sensitive. Having said that, don't try to explain this to others, somehow it's mind boggling

So obviously straight down to business then.

As I remember...

Politician speak for if what follows is later proven to be untrue, which it surely is, it's simply because of my poor memory.

Rumor has it that they already met in Brunei, so they didn't need to visit Cambodia at the same time.

Yeah, that's what they want us to think.

Lots of ways to make it happen when you good buddy RUNS THE COUNTRY. Fly in sub rosa have a little hug n talkie, and fly out sub rosa, then make a BIG ENTRANCE two days later. There are no doubt, things they need to say, face to face, that USA's Echelon and other intelligence agencies could easily tap off of their supposedly 'secure' phones.

No doubt, discrete, before and after, meetings.

The phrase "Yeah, that's what they want us to think" tends to lead to a "conspiracy" statement and sure enough.................Don't you think you're being a tad melodramatic here?

If Echelon used Thaksin as a trigger word they'd be bogged down for the next couple of years just going through the TV Forum posts!

Here I agree with you, no need to start with 'government conspiracy theories'. When people lie the truth will come out eventually anyway.

Actually I have it on good authority that a couple of years ago Hun Sen borrowed Thaksin's lawnmower and Thaksin just popped round to see if he could have it back.

...and she pissed off tons of government officials canceling her speech and presentation at the meetings she was supposed to have on the 14th and 15th. She couldn't even admit until the last minute she cancelled. She's already rubbing people in high positions the wrong way. For her to cancel the civil meetings and appointments she had and the way gov't officials bend over backwards, I'll laugh when everyone is turned against her. But it seems it's already in the works as she and the other 3 assistant prime ministers aren't following through on anything other than a way to get big brother back and keep the dynasty.

Wish the family were from any other country, as they would have been history long ago.

That was kept close to the ground (in a manner of speaking).

What? What meetings are these that she was supposed to have on the 14th and 15th? Each country visited on the ASEAN tour is scheduled to last one day only. Methinks you are confusing the postings of your colleagues with reality.

close, but no cigar. It was a lawnmower loaned to Thaksin by globalist hub Chatham House, and he was asking for it back because Hun Sen was being a bit tardy with the oilfields deal. Which is where the giant lizards come into the equation.....

Please pay attention. "It had four tiny arms, a long tail, a head like a baby alligator and was bright green. It looked exactly like a Chinger except that it was seven inches tall instead of seven feet." Ask Bill, our Galactic Hero

I suppose no one sees;

the manipulation of PTP as being a conspiracy on a grand scale, and the clan behind it is not conspiring daily to keep control and achieve it's ends.

Come on folks, smell the coffee,

it's by far the most vast conspiracy around these days.

con·spir·a·cy noun, plural -cies

1. the act of conspiring.

2. an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot.

3. a combination of persons for a secret, unlawful, or evil purpose: He joined the conspiracy to overthrow the government.

4. Law . an agreement by two or more persons to commit a crime, fraud, or other wrongful act.

5. any concurrence in action; combination in bringing about a given result.

Note how they so purposely say;

'There was no discussion of Oil Fields Deals.'

This has been central to their economic aims since day one.

Hun Sen can't do it without a partner and a deal on the table about borders.

Thaksin just sees a huge payday for the clan and knows he has the leverage to get his team a good payday as long as they keep the misdirection going till they quietly get things nailed down.

You don't see that the border war artificially escalated under, and against, the Dems to help remove them was part of the conspiracy? Those that died were just colateral damage in a game of real politik for strategic reserves, and the huge profit potential for some players..

Interesting take on the matter. Rewarding murderous and extortionate behaviour hasn't tended to work out in the past but maybe it will this time. Yeah, that's the ticket!
