Police ready to deal with Red Shirt gathering

BANGKOK, 18 September 2011 (NNT)- About 1,300 police force have been dispatched to the Democracy Monument to ensure security as the gathering of Red Shirt people is scheduled today.

Over 10,000 Red Shirt members are expected to join the 5th anniversary of the coup and to commemorate those who lost their lives in the crowd dispersal 15 months ago.

Police have no plan to close off the roads around the Democracy Monument unless the crowd has spilled onto them.

Participants have been warned to refrain from using inappropriate language.

No plans unless it spills over huh? And the protest is not closed of either?! So they're NOT prepared for it! ...But the police are Thaksin supporters any how, as well as timid when it comes to real confrontation. They didn't control mobs last time, why would they now?

What time is this suppose to be? I find this kind of stuff interesting because of its symbolic meaning that area suffered a lot of destruction by where I live there are still bullet holes in some of the buildings.

My BIL and others from his district have been dispatched to bkk for this. He and most of his friends are staunch supporters of ANYTHING non-red. Don't know where you got your info about police being Thaksin supporters. I'd like to see some non-biased survey results.

The BIB seem to be adapt at arranging and posing for photo sessions, at the scene and at the station. The tailored tight fitting uniforms, knee high boots, display of ribbons (never figured what they represent), etc could be an indication of a hidden desire to be on the big screen. I can think of few groups in Thailand, that could match the unsavory reputation of the group as a whole.

Around 11 o'clock, many roadside stalls were being set up to sell red-shirt souvenirs as well as food and drinks. A stage is being set up. Rallies are mostly fun nowadays. Buy some souvenirs and red shirts with latest slogans, a few CDs, eat & drink and leave before the shoutcast begins. Sanouk, I'm tempted to join, only a few block away :)

It will be interesting to see the results of this demonstration. The last time I crossed a red shirt demonstration was at Central World about a year ago.

At that demo - traffic was snarled (but motobike taxis worked great), it was packed, loud, and peaceful.

It looked, btw, like the vendors did a rip-roaring business that day, ... well maybe not Ralph Lauren and Gucci, but Big C & the street vendors ...

;)

The coup + 5 years ... will want to see how the Thai media covers this.

Dont know where you got your info from that they'e NOT. The other 99% of the police who do support him are known as supporters by everyone with the most basic knowledge. Last year and other years prior I saw with my naded eye, the police do nothing about controlling an ever more violent mob. The puppet master was once a policeman himself.

Lucky you know some who're more informed, but too bad they're few and far between.

And 4 years before that, they burnt the place to the ground.

perhaps you meant 4 months before that and not 4 years ?

In any case, it was about to re-open and was looking good.

Redshirts don't pay for Ralph Lauren or Gucci - they loot it.

Thaksin supporters mark Thai coup anniversary

BANGKOK, September 18, 2011 (AFP) - Thousands of "Red Shirt" supporters of Thailand's fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra gathered in Bangkok on Sunday to mark the fifth anniversary of the coup which toppled their hero.

Special branch police estimated that about 6,000 Red Shirts had massed by early evening in the city's historic district, with around 1,000 police officers deployed or on standby.

"We still now do not have full democracy because of conditions which were set after the coup" including a new constitution introduced by the junta afterwards, Red Shirt spokesman Worawut Wichaidit told AFP.

The Red Shirts staged two months of mass demonstrations in central Bangkok in April and May last year that triggered a deadly military crackdown which left more than 90 people dead, mostly civilians.

The movement has held a series of peaceful one-day rallies since.

In July, Thaksin's youngest sister Yingluck Shinawatra, the current prime minister, led the Puea Thai party to a decisive election victory. She has raised the idea of an amnesty for politicians including her brother.

Actually, a deliberate typo to see if you would go for the crux or the strawman. Finally accepted arson as among the red-shirt crimes?

As the mis-statement wasn't controversial, contrary or illogical , I would say no. Feel free to differ.

Seeing that no red shirt has been convicted of arson at Central World, I would say that was a controversial statement aimed at provoking a response, which you admit was your aim;

Ozmick, strawman?

Repeating what was said, last year the demonstration was quite peaceful, and as noted after a mere 4 months, Central World was "lookin' good" and ready for business again.

Can't help but to recall that those killed were still dead, though, ...

Who killed them and who's fault was it--the P.M.s If they were not there they wouldn't have been any killings. and if the police were any good they would have controlled the amount of protesters(GANGS) collecting in vast numbers.

The police. If the Thai police followed the examples of the Gendarmerie in Paris in the students protests of the 1960's, all would have been over quickly I assure you.

One clout from one of those twirling lead weighted full length capes did rather affect ones zeal for violent protest and ones interest in matters political or ones misguided view as to what a "street party was." did fade quickly..

Allo Allo what's all this 'ere then ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we read a report here last year stating the Red Shirt stage was drawing its power supply from a local police station?

I would say it was a response that most of us balanced people KNOW to be true and only red shirts would find childish arguments against!! I suppose they didnt enter Chulalongkorn hospital either?

If that was the case I'm sure you would be called as important witness for the prosecution. As it is, it appears that the witnesses so far are not as sure as you are of the red shirts involvement in the burning of Central World. I do not recall mentioning anything about Chulalongkorn Hospital, why did you bring it up?
