The Democrat Party should stop faulting former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, his legal adviser Noppadon Pattama said yesterday, arguing the main opposition party had no evidence implicating Thaksin in the alleged conflict of interest in Cambodia.

"I have been offering Bt100 million reward for anyone who can prove that Thaksin has business interests in the oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Thailand - but the Democrats have nothing to back up their allegations," he said.

Noppadon said the Democrats should not try to portray him and Thaksin based on false evidence.

"If the Democrats want to be critical, their views should be based on facts," he said.

He said Thaksin and he were among recipients of medals awarded by the Centrist Asia Pacific Democrats International in Phnom Phen in recognition of their international service, denying the medals belonged to the Cambodian government.

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said he was still waiting for the government to clarify how it would proceed on troop withdrawals from the disputed area covering 4.6 square kilometres near the Preah Vihear Temple.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha seemed to have made conflicting remarks as Yingluck said she would deploy policemen but Yuthasak insisted the troops would remain, he said.

He said Yingluck should have been firm and consistent on Thai sovereignty over the area instead of wavering between uncertainty about the territorial jurisdiction and conceding the area as being in dispute.

The inconsistent stand might adversely impact on the review by the International Court of Justice, he said.

He reminded the government that the 2004 Thai-Cambodian Memorandum of Understanding on overlapping martime zones should not be reactivated without rectifying certain flaws, such as the Cambodian claim over Ko Kut, also known as Koh Kood.

Echoing Abhisit, Democrat spokesman Chavanont Intarakomalyasut said Yingluck might have made it more difficult to resolve the issue over the temple and its vicinity.

The prime minister should not make differing statements on the issue, that she might not have known all the background related to the dispute, he said.

He said Thailand would be at a disadvantage if relying solely on the 2004 MOU to negotiate on the oil and gas concession.

In regard to the move to extradite Thaksin from Cambodia, he said Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul had all the details about Thaksin's whereabouts and activities in Phnom Phen, hence he was obligated to inform the Office of the Attorney General to issue an extradition request.

"The government has pertinent information for the extradition request," he said, arguing for the activation of the extradition process even though the Cambodian authorities might not cooperate.

He is hopeful that he will return to Thailand very soon.

Ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is now on vacation in Cambodia and is welcoming visitors from Thailand, including Pheu Thai Party members, key leaders and some 100 members of the red-shirt group, at a Phnom Penh Hotel.

Thaksin was scheduled for a golf outing with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, but it was canceled, as the Cambodian leader had a sore wrist.

The ex-premier told visiting red-shirt leaders that he is confident that he will be able to return to Thailand very soon.

The 15th Move website (www.15thmove.net) broadcast a news report from Cambodia's Bayon TV1, which covered the reception dinner hosted by Hun Sen for Thaksin and his guests at a Phnom Penh Hotel.

The event was attended by Cambodian cabinet members and senior officials including Deputy Prime Minister and President of Cambodian Petroleum Authority Sok An, Defense Minister General Tea Banh and Hun Sen's son Hun Manet.

There were a total of 400 guests.

Among the red-shirt leaders were Jatuporn Phromphan, Nuttawut Saikuea, Weng Tojirakarn, Thida Thawornset and Korkaew Pikultong.

In his speech to open the reception party, Hun Sen said the event was an opportunity for leaders from the two countries to meet, which will foster stronger ties between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as allow Thai visitors to meet with Thaksin, whom they have been supporting for a long time.

Most posters here get bogged down in the day to day inanities that Thai journalism spews out regularly. What's important to remember is that ASEAN walls all fall down in 3 years ans all economics will then be regional, including opening up Thai jobs to citizens of other ASEAN countries. Who is served by these walls falling down and how much is to be made for those who can act as intermediaries in this coup by treaty? As bad as Thaksin is, he is but the thin end of the wedge.

Thaksin willing to return royal decorations

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will likely agree to return all of his royal decorations if required to by law, Government Spokesman Natthawut Saikua said yesterday.

If Thaksin fails to appeal the Supreme Court's guilty verdict and two-year jail sentence against him in the Ratchadaphisek land case, the Knight Grand Commander (Second Class, higher grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao would need to be recalled.

A PM's Office decree endorsed by then-PM Thaksin in August 2005 gives eight criteria for the recalling of royal decorations, including if a person is convicted by the highest court and ordered to serve time in prison.

EPILOGUE: Thaksin DID fail to appeal his guilty verdict, but has never complied with the recall law he himself signed.

Whilst searching for this information I read on several websites that Thaksin and Hun Sen were close to signing an agreement on the sharing of the oil fields. On one of the sites they claim that "In early 2006 Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra concluded a secret oil deal to personally share "under the table" a portion of royalties to be paid by oil exploitation companies. Those companies had been exploring very promising offshore oil and gas deposits in the Gulf of Thailand, including in the overlapping zones claimed by both Cambodia and Thailand."

I don't know if I am allowed to post the link here or not and i must admit I don't know that particular website, whether it is genuine or not.

If it is true then we know why Thaksin is in such a hurry to complete the deal.

I came across this suitable commendation... that is, if former Thai Rak Thai Deputy Party Leader Suwat Liptapanlop is willing to pass it along.
