Im looking to get a colonoscopy done in Bangkok but Im not sure where to go. I have very limited funds and this is not covered by my insurance. In the USA they told me it would cost around $1700 usd and thats too much for me to afford so Im looking to get it done while I am in Bangkok. Thanks for any advice.

You might check out the current cost at Vibhavadi out on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road at the intersection with Ngam Wong Wan, opposite Kassert U.

http://www.vibhavadi.com/english/index.php

Here's what it ran a few years back:

7 July 2007 Vibhavadi Colonoscopy b 16,091 $474.80

BTW, this included a one night stay in a nice private room. Checked in in the afternoon, evening spent watching cable TV and gulping down there liquid cleanser and trips to the crapper. Did the deed the next morning, and home after lunch.

Send them an email to check cost. Be sure to ask if they still like a night in the hospital, possible you might be able to cut that out. My U.S. based insurance covered this.

Thanks Mac, I will contact them.

Can I ask if they gave you anesthesia during the procedure, as in knocked you out?

Thanks,

Robert

Sure did, sleepy time, and woke up in a bit with no hangover.

FYI, a couple years later I had an Endoscopy, just had to ask the doc if they used the same instrument, and if so, was it cleaned beforehand.

Mac I would say thats a darned good price for an overnight sty, anesthesia, and procedure. I was told that insurance wouldnt pay for it unless there were symptoms such as blood in stool, etc.

Kalbo did they keep you overnight?

I had one done in BNH (one of the more expensive hospitals) about a year ago. Cost about B20,000 (I think) which is more or less $450. Barring the enema trauma, it wasn't an unpleasant experience at all.

No, mate. They gave me some salty tasting stuff to take home and drink the night before, which was excruciating in that I was awake all night emptying my bowels. Then I showed up at the hospital around 8am, where another nurse gave me 2 enemas. After leaving there with my pride and arsehol_e in tatters, they sent me down to the 'operating room', where the deed was done. After recovery etc, I was back up speaking with the Doctor, and was out of

the hospital by around 1pm, clutching photos of my intestines. Very efficient.

Happily, the stuff they gave me to drink wasn't all that bad tasting, just bland.

Oh joy, now I know what to expect. How long did it take you guys to return to normal? Were you able to function the day after the test? Did you have to stay close to a bathroom?

You're worrying too much, matey. I was recovered and out of the hospital by early afternoon, functioning perfectly, albeit a lot lighter, and even drove myself home. Probably the only thing I did notice was some unpleasant wind in my gut when I did eat later that day, and some tremendous farts. I also remember the feeling after the colonoscopy, as the sedative made me feel very 'nice', for want of a better word.

I priced these recently for my sister. Best price was St. Louis Hospital. I believe around 12,000 - 13,000 Baht with ward accomodation, would of course be more for private room. You're only in the bed a few hours so big waste of money IMO.

Although it is an out same day procedure you have to go through the Admitting Dept and they will start off showing you their most expensive suites. You have to be very firm to get the inexpensive rooms/ward beds.

Sheryl, thanks for the info. Do you happen to know how many people are in a ward?

I had both done a few weeks ago in BNH...a look up and a look down. They put me out as I have problems when the dentist touches the back of my mouth, no way could I swallow a tube! The total cost was not a lot over 30000 Baht and that included in overnight.

Is BNH Bangkok Hospital? That seems like a good price for both plus a night in the hospital.

BNH is short for Bangkok Nursing Hospital (used to be called Bangkok Nursing Home but changed when they built a high rise many years ago). One of the oldest and most expensive Hospitals in Bangkok. Bangkok Hospital is a specific hospital (in same price range) on other side of town as well as a large group of hospitals under same management nation wide.

Thanks for the explanation Lopburi.

Since these hospitals seem to be around the same price give or take a few thousand baht, can I ask how satisfied you all were with the service provided? Was the staff competent, were the rooms clean, anything make you scared or not want to revisit that hospital? I have had good experiences overall with Thai hospitals, the only bad experience was that I forgot to ask the price of one hospital before I went in (for food poisoning, so it was an emergency), and when I got the bill it was triple what I thought it would be, so I paid the bill and never went back there. So before I get this procedure, I will surely ask for a complete cost before going in. Of course, that doesnt always do the trick, but it might help.

And thanks! And it helps me to know that Im not the only who has to have this procedure... wink.gif

Hi Rideswings! I do not know if I am late for this but my Husband just did it early this year in Sirirat hospital. This is a famous local hospital and it costs us only Baht8,000 in which duing our inquiry they gave us a price list and price stood from Baht10K to Baht15K because this will be depending on your condition. Doctors there is well experience and my husband doctor can speak english. We usually go to Samitevej but this time we made it since we were so comfortable with the doctors analysis and recommendations. How are you doing now? Hope everything will go smoothly.

Had a colonoscopy done a few years ago back in the US and they gave me pills instead of something to drink. Was a lot easier to take and, based on the results, just as effective. biggrin.gif

What's all this talk about (a) overnight or recovery rooms/wards and (B) anaesthesia?

I had a colonoscopy at BNH in 2005 and after a brief wait in the waiting room was ushered in to the exam room, got on the table, and the procedure commenced. I was totally awake/alert during the process -- they even had a monitor facing me so I could watch if I wanted. No pain whatsoever, just a bit uncomfortable when they added the air bubbles. When finished, went to toilet, cleaned up, got dressed, and went home.

Anaesthesia? Recovery room?

Could that procedure have been a sigmoidoscopy? The "short" stick up the end. I also had one at BNH 10 years or so ago, same deal, no anesthesia, awake, and watching it on the TV, ugh.... Went for breakfast afterwards at the Madrid.

Had a colonoscopy at Vejthani. Done under twilight sedation. The cost when I was presented with the bill was double the initial estimate because the doctor had to do a polypectomy. However, the bill was also incorrect - they got the price of some metal clips wrong. It wasn't much fun trying to argue about the bill when I was still groggy from the sedation.

The following year I had a colonoscopy at Samitivej Sri Nakarin. A far better experience. They were much more organised and professional and the procedure was performed under general anaesthesia, so more comfortable.

Both places charged a basic fee of about 16,000 Baht. The laxative and the initial consultation are on top of this.

They called it a colonoscopy, and per Wikipedia: "A colonoscopy allows an examination of the entire colon (measuring four to five feet in length). A sigmoidoscopy allows an examination of the distal portion (final two feet) of the colon." I'm sure they went WAY farther than two feet inside me. Four to five feet sounds about right.

However, the part about the powder mixed with 64 oz of clear liquid in preparation was not part of my ordeal, so now I'm not sure.

It was a lot cheaper than current prices for colonoscopy, as well: it was part of a physical that cost either B12,000 or B15,000 (can't recall any more exactly).

Now that I'm over 55, I probably should go in for a colonoscopy. The deal at St.Louis Hospital that Sheryl mentioned seems a reasonable price and process.

I had a Colonoscopy in November 2010, at the Vibharam Hospital 2077 Phattanakarn Rd Suanluang, Bangkok, it is near Bang Kapi, great hospital have used it for a few years now, it cost me 9,900 THB , $US 330.00 that included some other tests also, the doctor found one polyp that he removed, very clean, great staff, quick service, highly recommend this hospital.

Had one in Chulalongkorn Hospital, nighttime clinic (this allows you to have a fixed apointment) (nighttime starts at 4 pm) 5100 thb, in daytime clinic probably half. They had to make a biopsy which was 700 thb more. Had Dr Pornthep and was satisfied with everything.

I too haven't heard of this before... Perhaps you can explain a bit how the night clinic works... how you access it.... and what kinds of things they can handle there via that clinic.... Also, even if you have an appointment, I'm wondering what kind of waits would be involved?

PS... so, how did they handle your colonoscopy? A late night look up your.....? And then when they finished... spending a night in their room.... or out the door and sending you home?
