Hi,

I will be staying in Bangkok from 01.10.2011-04.10.2011 and will be leavin to Koh Phangan on the 4th.

I would like to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend in Bangkok.

Any suggestions where this is possible without getting ripped off?

Thanks a lot in advance!

There are many jewelers in China Town who specialise in diamond rings.I guess that is what you are looking for as an engagement ring.

Good luck with your search and best wishes for your future with your chosen lady.

Cheers

Thank Sandgroper. I will be looking in Chinatwon then.

I guess buying a diamond ring in Chinatown would be thrilling, because I wouldn`t be able to tell if it's real or not.

I will be looking for gold and white gold ones there.

Thanks!

I've bought a few diamonds at Jubilee on Silom (opposite Narai Hotel). I've found them to be competitive and trustworthy. I've had each valued in the UK on return and all have been much cheaper than UK and most importantly - have all been diamonds!!!

Of course if you go for over 1 carat you'll get an internationally recognised certificate too - which for a wonderful girl I'm sure thats the minimum you were thinking of?!

With the XR it's actually cheaper to buy on line in the UK now :o

If your gf is Thai the engagement ring wont mean a dam_n thing, only the fact is shiny and worth money and can be easily sold.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ! she'll do that for you in heaps without you even trying.

You are likely more secure buying there than most other location as it is family business for generations and they do not do that by cheating customers. My wife uses one of about half dozen in the Ban Mor (electronic area) one block West of Old Siam shopping center.

Then you would probably not be able to tell it's real anywhere else in the world too

Seconded.

I actually bought mine inside Old Siam. The diamond was GIA certified, and laser serial numbered, good price, good service. Shopped many places around Bangkok, even at MBK, where I found good quality, but slightly higher prices.

Stay with the larger, long-established shops, and you will get what you pay for. Do note, however, that diamonds are quite a bit more expensive in Thailand than in, for example, the US, for the same quality and weight. Might be better off buying at home...

Look along Charoen Krung Rd towards China Town from Silom Rd. Also along Silom from Charoen Krung Rd towards Sala Deng. Most places are wholesale only but many will sell "samples". There are so many it's mind boggling. Stay away from the tuk-tuks jewelry store where they get are gas if they take you there.

My suggestion is a large jewelry center which is called the "Jewelry Trade Center" on Silom Rd at Silom 19. Hundreds of shops inside on several floors. Ask for certifications on anything you buy. If they can't give you one don't buy from them. Don't tell them your budget or how much you want to spend. Ask for the price per caret weight of the stone, its quality rating, and from where it was obtained (country). Buy the stone, then have a ring made for it from the same place. The stones are what will vary in prices the most and should make up the most value in the ring. The settings will run basically the same in price whether it be silver or gold(obviously gold is more). Sometimes the setting is more because the metal has more value. If you have one made it takes about a week. You can get them faster but they will cost a little more. Or buy one already made up.

Im surprised that no one has mentioned Cartier yet, or the jewelry shops in Siam Paragon. Thats where I would go, just to be safe.

But sure, you go to Chinatown and hope for the best. laugh.gif
