Ukraine arrests suspected serial killer

2011-09-24 00:47:36 GMT+7 (ICT)

KIEV (BNO NEWS) -- The Ukrainian government on Friday announced it has arrested a suspected serial killer, although few details about the number of victims were immediately released. He is also a suspect in a number of rapes.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohyliov said a suspect had been arrested. He did not identify the suspect or indicate when or where the man was arrested, saying the information is classified.

"This is a maniac who killed people for sexual motives," Mohyliov said, as quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency. He said it has been proven that he killed at least three women after he raped them while at least two other women were also raped but not killed.

However, Mohyliov said the actual number of victims is believed to be "much greater". He declined to provide other details or give an indication about the suspected total number of victims, claiming this is 'secret information.'

Ukraine's most notorious serial killer is Anatoly Onoprienko who killed as many as 52 people between 1989 and 1996. The man - who is also known as 'The Terminator' and 'The Beast of Ukraine' - usually chose isolated homes where he killed the family following a set pattern; first the father, then the mother, and then their child or children before burning down the house.
