One injured in school blast

By The Nation

A bomb went off yesterday at a Narathiwat school, wounding a soldier guarding it and causing panic to schoolchildren.

The fivekilo explosive was planted under the roof of an unused building in Pracha Bamrung school in RaNgae district, and was detonated through mobile phone signals when a sixman patrol went in to take a rest. The blast seriously wounded patrol leader Sergeant Abhisit Srianurak.

Quoting witnesses, security officials said a black Isuzu pickup was seen speeding from the school not long before the patrol finished its morning escort mission for teachers and students and was about to enter the building which was its rest area. Police later theorised the explosion was the work of insurgents.

Suvarnabhumi Airport has flood prevention system in place

BANGKOK, 24 September 2011 (NNT)-Suvarnabhumi Airport is preparing for the possible rise in water levels around the airport as the water runoff from the North continues to increase.

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) has sent a team of officers to inspect the areas around the airport and concluded that the current water levels do not pose a threat.

The AoT further added Bangkok and its surrounding provinces could be in for possible inland flooding as heavy rains had been forecast this weekend in the Northeast.

The authority may try to relieve the inundation by allowing the runoff to flow into rivers which are going to Bangkok and Samutprakarn before reaching the ocean.

According to the AoT, there are 8 water stations to the south of the airport which could relieve as much as 30 million cubic meters of water per day. The Airport has the flood prevention system in place which includes small reservoirs and 3 meter high flood walls.

There are also canals surrounding the reservoirs to help maintain the safe level of water. The AoT added later that should the water rise significantly, the Department of Royal Irrigation would begin to drain and release the water to the south of the airport.

Water relieved from the Chao Phraya to save riverside communities

BANGKOK, 24 September 2011 (NNT)-Bangkok's drainage and sewerage department chief Mr. Sanya Chinimit says the Chao Phraya River is being drained to allow quicker flow of water to the east and west sides of the city to save riverside communities from inundation.

The water is being released through Thewet Water Gate, in the east, from which the water will flow into Mahanak canal and Sansab canal respectively before reaching Phra Khanong water tunnel. Meanwhile, the water gate on the west of the city will be open to release water from the Chao Phraya River into Phasi-charoen, Bangkok Yai, Dao Khanong and Chak Phra canals. The plan will also help lower the level of flooding in Nonthaburi province.

In addition, efforts are being accelerated to relieve flooding in the east of Bangkok by opening water gates in Saen Saeb and Prawet areas to release water into Rapeepat canal and Khlong 13 in Nong Chok district. The authorities are keeping the situation under surveillance as high tide is expected at the end of this month which will coincide with the run off from the north.
