in my "online tv" favorites folder i have about 32 different websites that i access, depending on what country and what show i want to watch. I can watch all pay-per-view from USA or Europe on it..but the big limiting factor is, as usual, bandwidth... to stream HD content is dicey, at best, given my connection...

http://www.filmon.com/ This this also, it has all the British freeview channels. Their's an free iphone app you can download as well which gives you all the channels for free

This is also a subscription service and it's my guess that all the best stuff is fee-based not free. I stated watching something (great quality btw), but after a couple of minutes i got a message saying that my free-view, or preview, had expired, thus inviting me to sign up :(

The link posted by the OP has all the BBC TV channels winking at me, but as soon as i clicked on one, there was a message saying that this service is not available in Thailand :( Layout seemed a bit awkward in FF too, so it's probably best opened with IE for those yet to dabble.

I'm sure there will be a number of free bits and bobs that will entertain some folks, but i doubt I'll be fiddling or digging around any of these sites looking for it.

On a side note, the voiceover used for the introduction on filmon.com is great. I'm currently looking for someone who can produce a professional voiceover (must be a male middle aged or older), so if anyone is CM has the talent, you might want to send me a pvt ;)

Yes. All those Free British Freeview Channels only cost $15 a month with filmon.com. And maybe, after you sign up, you get a message saying, "not available in Thailand" The pic looks great though. Maybe its worth it. But the intro. said about $8.I suppose that's for the standard rather than the high definition.

just a comment on FREE vs Pay... unless it is a REAL pay service, like netflix, or a direct pay service from the station itself, all you are paying for is some middleman to get rich... MAYBE, that middleman might be pushing a bit more bandwidth, but depending on your connection here in thailand, you may or may not be able to take advantage of it.

Kinda like the situation with newgroups... you can pay for high bandwidth of quasi-legal newsgroups, or you can find other means of getting those movies/software/music...

It has always amazed me that the US govt chose to go after Napster/Limewire, (which originally made NO money), while ignoring those huge newsgroup companies that make bucks by the basketfull.

I'm not tech savvy about most stuff dealing with live streaming, and would appreciate some help -

I have 3BB 5MB download, 1MB upload, on fixed IP. My tested speeds are strong and steady. I use SlingBox to view US tv programs, but my streaming speeds are not good (240-260Kbps), and I'm working to improve on that. I need 800-1000Kbps.

I recently tried tvnutters, and the picture quality is excellent. Wish I could record and play back at later time! Question: Am I watching "Internet streaming" on tvnutters, and "SlingBox streaming (over the Internet)" on my SlingPlayer here in Chiang Mai? What is the streaming speed of tvnutters that I see? Is there a way to measure and monitor this?

How do these two sources (tvnutters and SlingBox) differ from the video which I download and view on such websites as MSNBC? Can you tell me what the streaming rate is for these websites?

Finally, a word about bandwidth here in Chiang Mai - another subject that I am dumb as dirt about. What can a resident of Chiang Mai do to insure that his bandwidth is strong and steady enough to do lots of live and recorded video viewing? Are there ISPs in Chiang Mai which are limiting or controlling or capping my video streaming?

Streaming vs. downloading is really two flavors of a similar thing...

Streaming just means data is being sent to your computer, and your computer is playing that data as it comes in (after building up a buffer of data to cover changes in data flow speed). The data isn't being saved as a permanent file on your computer.

Downloading means typically a single file is being sent to your computer, and your computer will receive and save the entire file typically, and then will either play it automatically or at least the file is available for playing. The data is being saved as a file on your computer.

I don't use the two video services you mention. But the necessary data stream rates to support video will depend on the quality of the stream being sent and the size of the video frame. The bigger the size of the video frame, the more data and faster data stream is required....

A lot of the commercial video streaming services, in order to play properly, require a minimum data flow of at least 400 Kbps... And then some like Netflix have variable streams, meaning their system will make available different quality streams that adjust automatically based on how fast a connection (how much Kbps) your individual Internet connection is producing.

In the user account settings area for Netflix, for example, I believe they have three or four different stream rates a user can select... ranging from OK video quality and modest data stream required, to high video quality and big data stream required, a couple of Mbps, I believe. Other streams, like NFL football, for example, allow the user to select and change the stream rate settings in the player itself. The NFL has a minimum 400 Kbps rate to work properly.

There are various freeware software programs that allow you to measure the rate of data incoming to your computer. For PCs, I like and use a free program called NetWorx.

If someone has an Internet connection that can't produce good speeds for streaming, then one obvious alternative (if the ISP can't be improved) is to choose downloading instead. Then, the video will play fine once the entire file or files are downloaded... it just may take some time for the download to complete.

But it all depends on the entity providing the video... Netflix, for example, doesn't provide movie files for downloading, only streaming, because the movie companies don't want you saving file copies of their movies on your computer, and then potentially sending them onward to your friends.

But of course, there are other places/services like Amazon Video where you can rent movies and they'll actually download the entire movie file to your computer and it then is playable usually for a 24 hour period once playing is started. After that, the movie rights expire in their player and you can't play the movie any longer, even though the file itself is still taking up space on your computer.
