Phuket Awarded “top Island In Asia 2005” Award

PHUKET HAS RECEIVED THE 'TOP ISLAND IN ASIA' AWARD FOR YEAR 2005

Phuket Island has received the “Top Island in Asia 2005” award from New York-based Condé Nast Traveler magazine in its 18th annual Readers’ Choice Award. Bangkok won the "Best Asian City" award.

Mrs. Suwalai Pinpradab, the Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Phuket Office, said representatives from Thailand have been sent to the event. It is the first time Phuket has received this award since its inception in 2000.

Locations were judged under six criteria. They included activities on the island, its beaches, residents’ friendliness, accommodation, restaurants, and shopping amenities.

Mrs. Suwalai added that this award gives Phuket a good image, and will help boost tourism because Condé Nast Traveler is the top tourist industry magazine, with a worldwide readership.

The magazine quoted that, “New Orleans can find hope in Thailand’s remarkable recovery. With five resorts, all in Phuket, in the top 15 Asian resorts category, there is proof that these beautiful regions are fully rebounding after last year’s tsunami.”

Yes it is a bit odd Jai Dee. I've been hunting too and found no mention on Conde Naste website at all. The only other reference was a story from Phuket Gazette from the same "official" TAT press release. :D Thanks for your effort!!! :o

No problems khall64au. :o

Please note that I only post the news on the Forum as it is reported from the various Thai News Agencies.

I make no claims about the accuracy or truthfulness of the content.

I usually don't make any comments about the content either... at least not in the original post. If I have a personal comment to make, I usually wait until someone else has had a go first, and then post my thoughts later.

I completely understand Jai Dee. Am not questioning the truthfulness of the article. I was after validation as I needed to check facts for a story myself.

Cheers! :o

Hmm ... it's all very interesting, isn't it? Maybe I'm just bored (or trying desperately *not* to do my essay for uni!), but I had a quick peek around on the 'net and came up with this link:

http://www.cntraveller.com/ReadersAwards/2005/Islands/

Unfortunately, at least from my reading of the table listed there, Phuket certainly isn't even at the top when limited only to Asian islands. And in fact, Koh Samui is also listed above it.

But maybe this isn't the award mentioned in the article ...

Yes I saw that too, but didn't like to say since it's Conde Naste UK and the "award" was supposedly issued by New York. So where is all the press then? That's what I want to know........... :o

Ah, I didn't realise there were different Conde Naste's all over the place. I'd never actually heard of them before, which was one of the reasons why I thought I'd have a quick look around for them in the first place.

Anyway, it's time for me to get back to my uni essay :-/
