I am asking for a friend, who is worried now, as she has been working for a hotel she is on a non-imm O, and the hotel have kept saying that they will get her a wp but so far nothing has been done about it

Last week there was an intern at the hotel on an ED visa, who went to Phuket Imm to enquire about how to extend her Single Entry 90day ED visa

The officer did not take kindly upon the fact she turned up there without any documents and said that to extend she would need to have certain docs +work permit

They did not take copies of her passport, but they must have rememebered the hotel name because the hotel got a call from them, apparently Imm said 'why are your interns turning up here without any docs?' not sure what else was said, but ...........

now my friend is worried as Imm have contacted the hotel , what does this mean? Why would Imm call the hotel to say this ? Will they send people in or tip off the Labour dept to check for wps?

PS My friend is leaving the country next week anyways for holiday, and will probably leave the company as they have been promising a wp but kept her hanging on.

She is not allowed to work without a work permit and is curently breaking th law and could be arrrested, prosecuted, jailed and deported. It carries a jail term of up to 5 years. That is why immirgation takes it seriously.

A jailsentence is not that likely, but if immigration or labour raids the hotel and find out she is working without a work permit she will be in serious trouble.

What has a workpermit to do with an ED visa ???

As said, to wok you must have a work permit. On an ED-visa no work permit is issued and so you are not allowed to work.

An internship on an ED-visa is possible, but only as part of training for a course at a Thai educational institution. Believe in that case no work permit is needed, but it must be reported to the authorities.
