Chuwit Unveils Another Gambling Den In Bangkok

OK, I'll have to trust you that many bars operating completely 100% in accordance in the law -- not having smoking or being a front for prostitution, not staying open beyond legal hours, not allowing underage people to work there or drink there, not showing flesh, etc., etc., -- still have to pay tea money.

Richard4849>> A lot of restaurants in good locations, bars, clubs etc have to pay continuous 'fees', protection-money and bribes...sometimes for thee mere reason that the promised liquor license is perpetually delayed...or under threat of being revoken 'if palms isn't crossed with silver'.

It's not that they are doing something illegal or bad - if the police wasn't an organized mafia.

Yes, understand that.

The conversation got started, though, when I mentioned Cowboy, Nana, and Patpong...where we all know that the bars are far from some place you'd take your gran.

Not without getting some strange looks. She's been dead for over 20 years.

I have a good Thai friend, now retired, who had a small bar in the Silom area for many, many years. It was more a local watering hole for a professional crowd. No questionable activities. He ran the place for years, so all his licenses were in order. He paid 4,000 baht a month. I asked him for what and was told 'because he had to.'

I don't know a lot about Chuwit, but I think he got tired of forking over a lot of money. It probably wasn't predictable either. I would guess there were always some new faces looking for some of the action.

He's a little like poacher turned game keeper. No harm in shaking up the cesspool, I guess.

A businessman making billions from an illegal business never gets tired of forking over a few million so the tills can keep turning over.

There's more to the story -- mostly, I think, about Chuvit just liking to get his ugly mug on the TV.

Anyway, I hope he eventually gets bored of casinos -- basically a victimless type of crime -- and shines the light on some corruption that has actual living, breathing victims.

How about cops who take money to protect brothels with underage girls? How about cops that take money to turn a blind eye to places like Santika that end up killing dozens of people?

And on, and on.

Taking drugs is a victimless crime too. Why do they bother with it?

... speeding is victimless too.

Speeding is only a victimless crime until someone dies as a result.

Drugs...I'm with you (for many of them, anyway).

:ermm:

Speeding is victimless until someone dies as a result.

Drugs are victimless until those addicted rob someone for their needs.

Gambling is victimless until someone steals to feed their addiction.

Not sure what your point is. Legalize the lot, or outlaw the lot in all their forms?

Oh well, guess you won't be vacationing in Vegas any time soon.

Seriously, though, almost anything can be addicting.

Drugs. Gambling. Food. Sex. Video games. Internet forums. Fishing.

So, you want to make everything that can be addictive illegal...just in case someone victimizes someone else to be able to continue indulging in them?

Why do farang always say there are no honest Thai policemen. It's simply not true. There are dozens of them.

Yes there are, but ......................

Recon the guy should have 24/7 Police protection :)

555 i'm sure he'll have to fork out even more for that!

You know corruption is on every level of Thai society, even to get into a good school you have to hand a basket over and an envelope full of dosh to the principle. You can't wipe out corruption by cracking down on just police. What a joke ey. All Thai's are on the take there all corrupt it's just who they are.

Finally someone with morals in Thai guvment

I wouldn't even give him credit for a guilty conscience.

He's a politician. He wants his face in the papers and on TV. The fact that some people here believe he is truly a champion of justice proves that it works.

Fantastic crackdown 1% being exposed.. and they are warned in advance.:whistling:

But at least Chuwit did expose it, not his fault that the BiBs took a few days, to arrange a raid ! In fact, they rather played-into-his-hands, being able to video the removal of all the equipment too !

HAHAHA...I've seen some farangs in those bars who look like they died twenty years ago, too. Maybe she could get a date.

Interesting idea for a new theme-bar ! Dead interesting ! Bet the local corpse would still need paying-off !

.. so hard to find, when you need one ! :whistling:

If everyone is corrupt....is it then corruption or the way of life......if you pay a bribe in bangkok...will anyone hear you ??

I wouldn't myself go so far, as to claim that, but I do applaud anyone (and there are dam_n few) who does actually expose corruption.

I would also suspect that, were he just a normal Thai politician, his party would have rushed to join PTP's coalition-government, in order to share in the 'goodies', so perhaps he's something a little bit out-of-the-ordinary ?

He isn't attacking Casinos per se, he is attacking police protecting/running them.

Read beyond the headlines.

No, but a private protection details. In-case police/police-associates try to enact a 'lack of protection' on him...

I understand that. So why not shake things up and take on some police corruption not having to do with casinos?

Geez richard....ya gotta start somewhere....where would you suggest to start ?? ...and why ??

He started with a casino. Now he gives us more bloody casinos. How about shining some light on something he is more familiar with, like a brothel? How about shining some light on police extorting money from truckers? How about cops taking back-handers to allow places like Panthip Plaza to stay in business? There are thousands of ways cops are lining their pockets other than casinos...some of them much more lucrative. Use you imagination.
