Thai undertaker jailed over hidden foetuses

BANGKOK, September 29, 2011 (AFP) - A court in Thailand on Thursday sentenced an undertaker to 40 months in prison for helping to hide illegally aborted foetuses at a Buddhist temple in Bangkok.

Suthep Chabangbon was convicted by a district court in the capital of concealing 15 of the roughly 2,000 foetuses found last year in the temple's mortuary rooms.

In January his colleague was jailed for 20 years over the case, which highlighted the scale of illegal abortions in a country where the procedure is banned unless delivery would harm the mother or the pregnancy results from rape.

The other suspect, a former nurse who performed illegal abortions, was in August sentenced to five years in prison.

Police have said that some of the corpses had been stored for more than a year.

They would normally have disposed of by placing them with the remains of people being cremated, but the furnaces had broken and the number of bodies had built up while repair work was carried out.

The Women's Health and Reproductive Rights Foundation of Thailand says each year up to 400,000 Thai women undergo abortions carried by untrained people in unhygienic conditions.

As the number of birth here per year is around 800,000, I let you compare the numbers! If no one is wrong, even china is doing better!

The South Bangkok Criminal Court yesterday sentenced Suthep Chabongbon, an undertaker at Wat Phai Ngern, to three years and four months in jail for concealing and destroying illegally aborted human foetuses. This first case hit the headlines when some 2,000 foetuses were discovered on November 16, 2010.

Suthep, 47, and his assistant Suchat Phumee, 39, have been accused of concealing foetuses in 348 instances from November 1, 2009 to November 13, 2010. On January 27, Suchat was sentenced to 20 years in jail in another lawsuit related to this case.

During police interrogation, Suthep confessed that former nursing assistant Lanchakorn Chanthamanas had given him 15 foetuses to conceal and had been paid between Bt200 and Bt500 each time. However, he denied any wrongdoing in court, claiming that he was illiterate and had been lured to sign some papers after police promised to protect him as a witness.

After considering evidence, the court found Suthep guilty yesterday. The suspect's family has already prepared Bt100,000 to apply for Suthep's bail release.

On August 16, 34yearold Lanchakorn was sentenced to 10 years in jail for providing illegal abortions before her sentence was halved because she cooperated.

Wow.

That's a lot of dead babies.

Now Thailand has it's own killing fields. :bah:

And that's despite Thailand being the UNFPA's darling example of the best and most effective family planning and women empowerment program in the world.

Despite the pills, the IUDs, the condoms, the onanism, the injections and everything else and despite the rampant male and female infertility they STILL have to abort that many kids.

Most of Thailand must be doing little more than having sex all the time everywhere with everyone.

Now I understand why things are running a bit better here. :)

SHOCKING report , ...........400,000 ! ,.... what is more shoking is that this is going on illegaly , yet , if those numbers are true and half the population are using the services of the temples and back street abortionists why is it illegal ? surely its not the religion objecting to it ,as they seem to be in the middle of it all , as i understand it, the catholic church is the biggest barrier in the west , who is it in thailand ? anyone with any info on that ? ......... the other shocker is that a huge number that are actually born dont seem to be wanted anyway , ..so many being ''adopted '' by the grandparents ,................ and also as 'plumeria' said, they must be ''at it'' all the time with anyone and everyone , ..........im off to google those figures now ,.......................... 10 MINS LATER; wow,... some of those numbers have suprised me , ...thailand would only be top ten if this info is correct , and the good old U.S of A , is in 9 th place before being trumped by thailand who move proudly in to 5th place spot, ......... this has really suprised me ,... another 'hub' for thailand in S.E Asia perhaps ??,......................... Amazing ! :o
