Reds should help flood victims: Army chief

The Nation

The red shirts, led by Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Promphan should focus on helping flood victims, Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Friday.

Prayuth was reacting to news reports that Jatuporn would hold a rally on Saturday to oppose the list of annual military reshuffle.

"The rally can take place in compliance with the law but at this juncture, flood relief is more important than the military line-up," he said.

Democrat to Investigate Attorney-General Over Refusal to Appeal Case Against Thaksin's Former Wife

The Democrats have expressed suspicion after the Attorney-General opted now to file an appeal to the Supreme Court after the Appeals Court acquitted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's ex-wife in a tax evasion case.

Democrat Party deputy leader and the head of the party's legal team, Thaworn Senium has requested that the public prosecutors provide copies of the relevant documents after they decided not to bring a tax-evasion case against Pojaman Na Pombejra, fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's ex-wife, before the Supreme Court.

Thaworn said he finds the decision suspicious and vows to study all the documents from the case, including the ruling of the lower court and the Appeals Court, as well as the opinions of the Attorney-General, to find the real reason behind the ruling.

Thaworn urged the Attorney-General to state whether they can release the requested documents by October 4 and to forward all copies to his legal team by October 11.

Thaworn threatened to cite the Office Information Act to pressure the Attorney-General to reveal the documents.

He pointed out that in the event the Attorney-General refuses to release the documents, it will reflect that the trial process is not transparent.

Meanwhile, Attorney-General Julasing Wasantasing replied that he will consider the Democrat's request and make his decision before the senator's Independent Regulatory Agency on October 5.

2,000 Schools Request 1.2 Billion Baht to Repair Flood Damage

The education ministry has reported that approximately 2,000 schools have requested 1.2 billion baht to repair flood damage and promised to root out tea money for school admission opportunities.

Education Minister Worawat Auapinyakul has said that because of the ongoing flooding situation in many parts of the country, the ministry has decided to postpone the GAT/PAT or the national college examination by another month, to November.

Worawat also reported that more than 2,000 schools have been damaged by the floods.

With help from vocational students, the ministry has already begun to repair some of the schools in the areas where the water has receded.

The education minister added that all schools can request urgent assistance at any time, and once the situation has improved, the ministry will initiate a rehabilitation program for the flood victims.

The Education Ministry has estimated that it will require about 1.2 billion baht to replace the equipment, such as computers, damaged in the floods.

Part of the budget will be requested from the government, while the ministry itself will fund between 500 and 600 million baht.

Worawut also pointed out that each of about 200 schools under the ministry’s control will introduce two special classrooms to accommodate the students whose parents are willing and able to provide financial support.

The education minister said that in comparison to the “pae jia” or school admission tea money, the policy is aiming to help the schools become more financially independent and to assist underprivileged students.

He has also pledged that the program will be implemented with transparency.

About the “One Student, One Tablet PC'” policy, Worawut said the ministry is currently reviewing the pros and cons of the program.

He added that there is no problem with the procurement process, but whether the policy will be implemented or not depends on how prepared the students are.

Govt Urged to Update Tourism-related Laws

The Association of Thai Travel Agents urges the Tourism and Sports Ministry to amend related laws to prepare for the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

Association of Thai Travel Agents, or ATTA, Chairman Siddiwat Sheewarattanaporn revealed that the ATTA is studying laws concerning tourism businesses before proposing draft amendments to the Tourism and Sports Ministry and agencies concerned within next year, saying that some of them are already obsolete.

He said that apart from studying Thailand's laws, the association is also researching other ASEAN countries' laws.

Siddiwat said a comparative study would show Thailand's advantages and disadvantages compared to other countries'.

He stated updated laws would prepare Thailand for the fast approaching ASEAN Economic Community, or AEC, in 2015.

In addition, he reiterated that there is increasing foreign investment.

The amount would dramatically rise after the launch of the AEC.

He said that Singaporean, Russian and Indian entrepreneurs are likely to establish tour services in other countries and that would adversely affect Thai small and medium enterprises.

The Nation

Rak Prathet Thai MP Chuwit Kamolvisit said on Friday he will next week disclose Bt8 billion irregularities involving a certain government office.

"The case is similar to the fire trucks scandal," he said, claiming imported goods left at Laem Chabang port as evidence.

Chuwit said the office in question had made a shady deal but could not take the delivery of the goods due to suspected corruption.

Commenting on the high court's verdict to seize his Bt3.4 million in ill-gotten gains in connection with the alleged prostitution ring, he said he respected the judicial ruling.
