Thai Airways Gets New Board Members

The board of Thai Airways International, Thailand's national carrier, has appointed four new directors, one of them acting police chief Police General Priewpan Damapong.

Meanwhile, the board will make the decision whether to acquire ten percent of Nok Air shares next Friday.

Thai Airways International has appointed four new directors to the board.

They are acting police chief Police General Priewpan Damapong, ACM Momluang Suprija Kamalasana, Transport Permanent Secretary Supot Sublom and Pradit Sintavanarong.

The appointments will come into effect on October 12.

Chairman of THAI's board of director Amphon Kittiamphon commented on the effect of the recent flood crisis on the national carrier's business operation.

Amphon said Thai Airways remains relatively unaffected by the flood crisis.

Only a small number of foreign tourists have cancelled their plans to travel to flood-affected provinces.

Amphon also commented on the board's plan to acquire another ten percent ownership of Nok Air from Krungthai Bank.

Currently Thai Airways owns 39 percent shares of Nok Air.

The director said acquiring more shares of Nok Air will allow Thai Airways to pursue its four airlines master plan.

According to the plan, Thai Airways hopes to have at least four airlines under its umbrella, namely Thai Airways International, Thai Smile Air, which is expected to be launched in 2012, Nok Air and another low-cost airline to replace Thai Tiger Airways.

However, Amphon declined to confirm if Thai Airways will buy Nok Air shares at 33 baht per share as expected.

The exact purchase price has not been reported to the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

After the purchase, Thai Airways will own 49 percent of Nok Air while Nok Air management will be left with 25 percent share ownership.

The Ladawan Fund holds six percent ownership while Siam Commercial Bank, King Power International, Supapong Asvinvichit and Patee Sarasin each holds five percent shares of Nok Air.
