the sad truth is the parents are why most of the girls are in the bars. the parents say we need money go work and know it means go work in bar what other skills do they have? parenting skills is not a high point for many of the working girls parents.

If I had to put a percent on it I would say 60% husband left and the lady stuck with one or more children. 20% parents. 20% husband. 10% like the action.

Too many people try to over think it. Just smile and enjoy yourselves. Nobody is coercing anybody. The young gals are going to do whatever they want to do. Unless you know your way around the Thai only underworld the average farang is not going to be taking advantage of anybody.

One only has to read the Pattya newspaper to verify that 100%.

It has been said with a good bit of truth that if you want to know how that lovely young woman is going to turn out like then just look at her mother. Having seen some of the mothers that is a scary thought. It's even scarier now that I have pictures to prove my point.

It is nice to see families that stay together. Last time I was there there was a mother daughter team dancing at Champagne in Pattaya.

And you think it is only foreigners that are doing this to young girls? Older Thai men have been doing this for as long as anyone can remember.

Doing WHAT to young girls?

Any girls I see are involved willingly. They are taught from birth to manipulate men. I don't include the despicable sex trade where parents sell their daughters into sexual slavery. However, that is seldom still in practise in Thailand, but still goes on in a few adjoining countries.

Good point. Many in the west love to throw around lighting rod type words like "sex slaves" but in the 4 years I have been living here and the 10 years I traveled this part of the world before I actually lived here I can honestly say I have never seen any girl here going with any man against her will. The closest thing I had ever seen was maybe Thai women in abusive relationships with Thai men.

This story sounds a bit far fetched in the first place. I know Thai women and there is no way they would stay with a farang man against her will. Nor would the family insist on anything like that. They might encourage her to hustle as many foreign men for money as she possibly can, but thats about it.

I been here since before Thailand had dirt and the only sex slave I have ever met was me. Lest you worry and notify an NGO I finally escaped my captors running at night down a Soi in Pattaya with all my possessions in a pillow case being chased by two drunken middle aged farm girls from Issan.

Somewhat of a non-sequitor, I know, but...

... what really surprised me, when I went to the US, was the extent to which people believed their own stories.

And in Malaysia, how serving staff can be so focussed on what they are doing. If only my own staff could concentrate like that. Shop! Shop!

O God, what pitifully low standards....

I remember a particularly depressing conversation with a (what do you call a chap you work with, but for different companies?... oh god - first the sense of humour, then the stage presence, and now the vocabulary... What's left (thank god I'm not a Quantity Surveyor....) with a, let's say colleague, and he says

"You can only work beneath your standards for so long"

SC

So I suppose that settles it then, I should take that job offer....

EDIT: IN a vain attempt to get back on topic, most women appreciate a sense of humour - thank goodness for language barriers

Actually, he was a straw man. He was a scarecrow. And he lacked a brain, not a sense of humour.

Subtlety and mastery of the fine art of clever put downs have always escaped me. I've always been slightly envious of Steven Fry.

I fear that your comments are wasted here on this forum. Little American men in their 60s or 70s will fail to see the irony, and little American men in their 60s or 70s will continue to entertain us with their tall tales. But maybe that's not such a bad thing.

we all deal with the parents. the girls send them the money anyway so these guys are circumventing the middle girl. I know of many girls that send most of what they get to mom. This is the thai way and wont be changed in my lifetime. Aside from that, any girl that is not repulsive can get more than 5k a month to send to the parents, therefore could leave at anytime without a guilty conscience since they could send the same or more. If they are not locked up then can go

The wicker man was in the film of the same name. I never actually sat all the way through it, but it did make a big impression on me. Particularly when I was hallucinating in hospital after a road accident.

Seems you are envious of a lot of things. I don't blame you. You missed a lot. San Francisco and London in the 1960's were a lot of fun (what I remember); almost impossible to describe in writing. Saigon, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei and Thailand in the 1970's are not believable to people today. I flew the last prop fighter in a war. The men that fought in the Battle of Britain and I have that in common. And just when I thought I was getting old along comes modern science with pills to make me feel young again. Ya, kid you missed a lot. I don't begrudge you your youth. I don't think growing up today is very exciting.

It doesn't really seem fair that you have to compete with me for women. My time should have been over long ago and my body consigned to the elephants graveyard. But this is Thailand and the country and women are designed for retired men. Not my fault it is what it is.

I am not the hero type. I flew 18 hours a week to get flight pay. I flew a couple of missions with the VNAF in fighter and attack aircraft. My hat goes off to the guys who did it every day. My favorite ride was in a T-28D. The Thai air force used them too at that time.

Good for you dude.

Do you not have any photos at all? I bet loads of us would love to see them. Anything black and white, and nostalgic, would be superb.

One more thing ------ I tried to join the RAF (Royal Air Force) when I was much younger. But for various reasons it didn't work out.

I have enormous respect for men who serve their countries.

Off topic my apologies. I had a lot of photos. My ex wife burned or sold everything I owned all I got was a shirt, pair of jeans and a pair of athletic shoes.

I knew one guy. One of the bravest men I have ever met. He saved downed airmen in combat. He retired to Thailand. Two years ago he was killed by a bus in Sattahip. I'm sure some other TV posters know who I mean.

The INTERNET is fascinating if you type in your military unit people have posted all sorts of photos of said unit. I found a bunch today. I even found one of my secretary who I had an affair with. I was not a combat guy I flew for administrative or maintenance purposes. If I ever saw bullets fly it was by mistake or chance and nothing I had planned. The exception being with a Vietnamese fighter pilot who thought I wanted to see some action. The Vietnamese pilot was wound a bit too tight in his black flight gear with purple silk scarf and thought he was an Asian John Wayne.

The first time I remember paying for sex was at 16 when after a fight with my GF I drove downtown and hired two black hookers and we went to an illegal after hours jazz club and drank and fornicated the night away. After college I got a job with a government agency that tracked down and tried to stop the contagion of social diseases like VD. I always liked hookers. They are just people like anyone else. Chicago jazz and blues was always populated with a lot of ladies of the night. Jazz started in New Orleans in brothels so nothing out of the ordinary there.
