Semper
OP. Regarding my recommendation of bringing a boring book. This one is perfect, "The Clinic" by Jonathan Kellerman. When I go to bed I like to read a bit before I dose off, this one I manage about 2 pages per night. So it's must be perfect for you.
sbk
Lets just discuss LEGAL methods of falling asleep since discussing ILLEGAL activities is against forum rules, and yes buying prescription drugs over the counter is illegal in Thailand, just because it happens doesn't make it legal as anyone who has lived in Thailand knows very well. Semper
Semper you REALLY need to understand what agency(s) read this forum and ingest the answers. Have back trawled your posts (as I mentioned out of boredom I would do in August one day) and you're ripe. Does that mean ANYTHING to you ? serenitynow
Bring a book, and it should be a really non-interesting one. You'll fall asleep quickly. I agree and recommend "Silas Marner". I keep it on my bedside table now for years. Never have gotten past page six before sleep overtakes me.
daveh
The prescription medicine Stilnox (called Ambien in the States). No drowsy pills, alcohol, or alternative nonsense medicines work for me, but Ambien is fantastic. You will most likely need a prescription, even in Thailand. A Thai friend of mine insisted she could get anything from the pharmacist (this was in Hat Yai), and returned in defeat because it can be used as a date rape drug. However, the I went to the doctor and he gave me a prescription. Ambien puts me out with no side affects the next day.
endure
Hi, My local chemist sells 10mg diazepam for 10B each. I always take two on long haul flights and on overnight bus trips too. Possession of diazepam in the UK can lead to 2 years in the clink and/or an unlimited fine in the Crown court or 3 months/£500 in the Magistrates. ukrules
The best one to use as far as I'm concerned is called Dormicum and it's generic name is Midazolam. You will need a prescription from a major hospital and you'll need to buy it from their pharmacy as well as it's no longer available from non hospital pharmacies. You might have some trouble persuading a Doctor to prescribe this for you, apparently they are cutting down on the usage of this particular drug. I got a prescription for this about a year ago from one of the large Bangkok based private hospitals. They would only give me 5 tablets which were the blue 15mg ones so that was more than enough for both legs of the journey. Half of one of the 15mg tablets will probably be enough for most people, if that doesn't work then take another half. The good thing about Midazolam is that it's short acting so you won't feel tired or hungover once it's worn off. Some of the other tablets like Xanax have much longer half lives and will stay in your system a lot longer.

Tonto21
I have to say guys, as much as I would like to take something to put me out when doing long haul, (and yes, I do my fair share flying) I just can't do it, nor can I, as seen every time I fly people kicking their shoes off before the plane leave the ground or pop that seat belt the second they hear that 'Bing' after takeoff. Does anyone read the safety instructions any more, or take note to the safety brief? Or take the time to track their escape route to nearest escape hatch? If you do…..I think you're a rare breed. I don't berate anyone for doing the above, Pop a pill at the airport, rock of to sleep on take-off, and snooze and cruse till you land…..Sweet! But I just can't do it, just like I won't wear shorts or sandals, (even with fire retardant socks) when I fly. Not all air accidents are fatal you know and when things go bad, they go bad fast. OK, falling from 50,000ft……..being sober as a judge in a bomb disposal suite is not going to save you. However, so many people turn into Hindus or fatalists when they fly and hand their lives over to the airline. As said I wish I could let go, pop a pill……or go 1st class! But I can't. Don't misunderstand me, I am not a nervous flyer, I used to jump out planes for a living, and having walked away from one air crash, (helicopter) I can positively say from my experience, sleeping tabs or too much alcohol will play a major factor if you get out alive, (if your crash is survivable)………..Another reason for not drinking too much or crashing out….is drooling…….It's not cool!
ukrules
But I just can't do it, just like I won't wear shorts or sandals, (even with fire retardant socks) when I fly. I never wear shorts or sandals either. These tablets don't put you in a coma, they're not really that strong unless you take too many - they just help you to fall asleep. You can still wake up very easily, well I do anyway. Most of them aren't really 'sleeping' tablets, they just help people to relax.
craigt3365
Take two dramamine and you will be able to sleep through your travels. They are also legal everywhere. We do long haul flights several times a year. Two dramamine work great. This last trip, I did use Ambien and slept fantastic for over 6 hours. Woke up feeling pretty good...my wife took 1 dramamine and didn't really sleep. I have a script for Ambien, so no worries. But dramamine works great. Ambien CR is the best. It's a slow release so it helps keep you asleep, unlike the regular Ambien which is great for knocking you out, but doesn't really help keep you asleep. Dr. Craig (HA!) I hear you ‘Swiss’ and up to a point I would agree, but….Plane goes up and long or short flight…. plane goes down. If I was unable to affect my exit from this life, I would be happy to leave this world in slumber………If that’s all there was too flying. However, not all who earn their ‘fluffy’ wings when they board an aircraft do it with nochance of escape! Bottom line, only youwill ultimately affect your escape. By all means take a couple on the flight over and it's easy enough to get a prescription while you're there for the return. Thought it would have been easy enough (and the cheapest option) to get a prescription here. Having said that, couple of pints before the plane, couple of G&T's before the meal and then some red wine takes care of me.

NanLaew
Years ago, fellow oil-patch travelers would swear by Dormicum but I never tried it as I always avoided pharmaceuticaly enhanced sleep. I did dabble with melatonin but it didn't seem consistent. On a United flight from NRT to SFO, the (unusually) smart airhostess was dispensing 2 bottles of wine to those who asked for it. Two bottles of Chilean red and I was out like a light! I tried popping a 20mg Levitra once.... the blood rushed to my (huge) dick and I passed out. Result!! But usually the sleep deprivation method wins for me. Avoid bed for 24 hours prior to boarding and I am usually asleep as they push back from the gate.... apart from that one time at IAH when I woke up in the deserted Air France lounge!
