Internet Surveillance Issues

I will be going to thailand shortly and was wondering if someone could provide some information as to what degree Thailand monitors Internet traffic apart from the web. I am thinking of both P2P and newsgroups(nntp). Has anyone gotten in trouble from sharing or from simply downloading either copyrighted or adult oriented material. Adult oriented material is as far as I know illegal to import but have anyone actively downloading such material for a greater lenght of time gotten any trouble from this. If I have to there are always such things as SSH tunnels, nntps and steganographic methods that I guess I'll employ anyways but the SSH tunneling would be good to not have to implement because most providers of such limit bandwidth usage.

Cheers

There are some token efforts to block porn sites but it's more a public relations exercise than anything else. In terms of content you probably won't attract attention so long as you *avoid* locally-sensitive political material and anything that would seriously offend the local populace. P2P faces some limitations but its mostly in terms of ISPs trying to conserve bandwidth (see separate threads from our P2P enthusiasts). If you are worried about your email or your hard disk take a look at PGP.

Virtually all internet traffic has to pass through the Communications Authority of Thailand so the government certainly has the opportunity to stick their noses into things if they feel like it, but porn and copyright violations probably aren't high on the priority list.

Thanks for the reply. I study among other things computer security so I know how to secure "local ground".:o I guess I will just use as much encrypted communication as possible without too much hassle and build myself a HTPC so I can store things encrypted on my machine. TrueCrypt is better than PGP in my opinion because it is opensource freeware and for the two-tier level of plausible denial it provides. If anyone knows any specific cases or have other relevant info it is of course very welcome.:-)

i agree with you totally.

off course is not right, for respect to this lovely country, download somethings politican or religious or porn that is offend local idea and,locally-sensitive political material and anything that would seriously offend the local populace.I think thai autorithy control this and i think is right. But i know this country from 7 years and i'm sure that if download only some mp3 or divx from europe, nobody make to you problem, off course if you don't make this for money or for seoul cd and business!!!!My thinker and now beginning also in europe(i'm sure also in thai)is that somebody download some divx e mp3 for personal use is nothing particurally bad,but if you do this for piretery or business this is bad and authority will block you and everybody do this,is right and i agree totally. :D

Abaut limited of p2p is problem of international bandwitc, nothing more, because in day time p2p is veryyyyyy slow, almost die,but in the night time from 24.00pm to 09.00am p2p go speed,so this demostre that the problem is only that the bandwitch internetional is veri little small.Don't think thai is bad for some blocks or trasparency of internet, this is delicated moment in this country with anything happening in the south and thai autorithy worried a lot about this,is normal, but he not interesting a lot if you download some mp3 or divx,i'm sure,i know this lovely country very well, and off course, anywhere something is very god and something is not right.bye and sorry for my english(a lot of error) :o

Personally I believe what goes on in my head and what my eyes see are noones business than my own. Even if my neighbour would be offended by what I like to watch or discuss it is not like I would point a movie canvas in his direction forcing the person to view whatever was so distressfull. Of course I might be damaged since I come from North Europe that are ranked at the very top as far as freedom and press freedom is concerned.:-) As the world is increasingly interconnected one should be careful to apply everyones wishes for censorship or content banning because nothing would be left.

About what is going on in Europe definately a lot of downloading is going on but there have been lawsuits against filesharers. That would then be because of the copyright, I have never heard of cases that someone were targeted for sharing regular adult material because it simply is legal content apart from the fact that a lot of it of course is copyrighted.

I have seen a lot worse than your english and I am not a native speaker myself.:-)

by the way gambling, internet casino and things like that get also blocked, don't know how efficient, because I never used that.

Europe has also tried to block some things (nazi things in germany, Iraq facts in the news), but it is close to nothing in compare.
