Hopefully there are some experts out there who may be able to give me a few pointers with this.

I am trying to connect to a clients VPN from Thailand for the first time. I have a company laptop, with VPN client software on it. I enter my username and password, and then the VPN client software immediately indicates a status of "Connected".

Despite this, I am unable to access any services - eg. Outlook server or network drives.

I appreciate connecting to a UK server will be much slower from here than it would from the UK, but I am wondering whether there is some sort of set-up issue.

I can see from the connection entry properties that there are 2 "transport" options: IPSec over UDP (NAT/PAT) and IPSec over TCP (with a specifiable TCP Port).

Are there any particular ports I should be avoiding or favouring?

Sorry if I am being dense, or if I have not provided all the relevant information.

Thanks for any help

You don't mentioned if you use both "transport" option.

Some years ago in a guesthouse I was in a similar situation.

TCP was blocked but UDP was working - but don't know about the background.

May be it depends what options are used in the router of the hotel / internet cafe.

An alternative, depending on your location and your desire for speed:

buy an Aircard (EDGE, CAT-CDMA, 3G) so you control every option in the firewall by yourself.

Edited: amendment
