SGD Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Still thinking about getting Thai TV in the UK. Would a Slingbox work "the other way around" from Thailand to the UK ? Get a decent internet connection in Thailand, a True subscription and installation, a minimum specification PC and router and then ....... can I view it in the UK ? If so, how do I change channel on the True system ? Just trying to think outside the box to get Thai TV in the UK.
ericthai Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 I have never done but thinking about doing it for my wife when we travel. It should work. for changing the channel on true you need to have the IR or RF cant recall which one it is which acts like the remote for the true box, some boxes have an input for this and then you just have a wire from the sling to the cable/satellite box, not sure if they have that here. If not then I believe the way it is done is a wire plugs into the sling with an IR/If whatever it is on the end of the cable and you set this up in front of the receiver of the cable/satellite box. You will need a good internet connection and a router, don't think you need a computer for this, just need it for the setup part then connect direct to the router. Good luck, if and when you do it let us know how good/bad it works. i will make a post if I ever get around to doing this. Right now my wife is happy with just watching online.
Langsuan Man Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 In theory it would work since the Slingbox comes with an IR remote extenders that are attached to the cable box or DVR and mimics the signal sent out by a remote. I would hope that you will be able to find a similar remote that can be duplicated by the Slingbox (they have a list of their pre standardized remotes) BUT, your biggest problem is going to be obtaining a good UPLOAD speed here in Thailand since in my experience uploading to the Internet is more important than download speed at your location when using a Slingbox I have cable Internet in the US and upped from 5 MBS to 10 MBS and the reception here in Thailand has been well worth it since I can realistically stream with as little as 250 Kbps actual measured download speed here in Thailand Unfortunately I find that streaming previously recorded TV from a DVR is much better since the Slingbox does not have to cope with a lot of buffering that way The only problem is that you will have to have someone in Thailand to physically access the Slingbox since it will occasionally need to be rebooted. I don't have anyone in the US to access my Slingbox but have automated it but that would be the subject of a separate topic
SGD Posted October 20, 2011 Author Posted October 20, 2011 Right now my wife is happy with just watching online. Could you please elaborate on this because it is the lack of this option, probably due to lack of knowledge and low quality, that I am exploring the slingbox option. I would much rather do it all online, even through paid subscription so any details you have would be much appreciated.
ketherin Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Hi can anyone help please, i have a slingbox in the UK accessing it from my android tablet in pattaya, everything was working fine for the first week now the speed when trying to connect with slingbox is saying only 30-50kbs so cant connect. Yet my internet over the wi fi connecting is really good, and i,ve ran a speed test to a bangkok server and im getting 8-9 Mbs. Why after a week would it suddenly be so slow, also got someone in the uk to power the slingbox off and back on..but still the same. Any ideas and thank you.
Langsuan Man Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 IMHO, the wifi at this end is the problem. But since you are using an Android tablet to connect to the UK Slingbox my concern would be the Android program that you are using to view your Slingbox Try it on a real computer (using the slingplayer provided by Sling media) and see how that works and at least you can diagnose if it is an Android problem or not
ketherin Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Thanks for the reply, and i did try it on my windows 7 laptop with the same result. Thing which bothers me is when i run a download speed test im getting really good results, 9 Mbs and my tablet and laptop bith run really well. So where is the bottleneck ? Thank you
Langsuan Man Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Download speed means very little on this end. What is your upload speed in the UK ? You also need to do a "ping" test to see how much "lag" you have between here and the UK Do you get a lot of "buffering" while the Slingbox is trying to connect ? Finally, do you get this error message when trying to connect ? If so, then have someone at the Slingbox location disconnect it and wait ten seconds before re-connecting

Thank you What isp are you with, I know virgin employ bandwidth restrictions at certain times - they call it traffic management
