PM Expresses Grievance over Navanakhon Flooding

The prime minister has expressed grievance that the government was unable to protect Navanakhon industrial park from flooding.

However, she has vowed that her administration will protect Bangkok from the incoming floods the best it can.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra expressed grievance after the government was not able to prevent flooding in Pathum Thani's Navanakhon Industrial Estate.

The premier said relevant agencies tried their hardest to prevent flooding there but that the embarkment was unable to hold off the floodwater, which was made worse by high tide and heavy rain.

Yingluck said that the flood operations center will speed up their evacuation of workers and residents in the area, moving them to safer grounds and will salvage machinery in a timely fashion.

Asked about measures to prevent flooding in Bangkok, particularly in Don Muang and Sai Mai districts, the prime minister promised that she will work to protect the capital as best she can.

Yingluck added that the water will be diverted into areas where it will have the least impact, while asking the public for their cooperation in helping to strengthen the embarkments.

Moreover, the government will expedite the rehabilitation plans for the general public, industrial sector and SME operators, who have been affected by the floods, in a bid to help boost morale.

The PM, however, declined to comment on whether the Chulalongkorn floodgate would be open.

Meanwhile, Yingluck's spouse, Anusorn Amornchat, revealed that the prime minister is still in good spirit even though his wife mentioned she has had some problems in ordering state agencies in the past.

However, there are no longer any coordination problems, as all parties are now fully cooperating with one another.

Anusorn went on to say Yingluck is not disheartened by the flooding but admitted that she is weary working so hard in her attempts to solve the problem.

He stated that the PM's morale has been boosted by the poll results, as they show that the majority of the respondents were satisfied with the government's efforts to solve the flood problem.

I thought the tides had already receded. And has it been raining today?

No seriously, any idea what was being made in this park that would have people worried?

The Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC) has ordered industrial plants in Nava Nakorn Industrial Estate to cease operations and evacuate workers, as water seeps into the industrial estate's sewage pool near Siam Kubota Co Ltd's plant.

thanks! for a minute there I was worried about chemicals and now that it's only turd : i feel more assured.

Hey man... i assure you having visited nava nakorn at a location near that sewage it is well stinky... i'd be happier with chemicals than turd!

PM apologizes for failure to protect Nava Nakorn Industrail Estate from flooding

BANGKOK, 17 October 2011 (NNT) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra apologized for failing to prevent the Nava Nakorn Industrial Estate from floods; still she insisted on her best attempt to keep Bangkok dry. Today, she is holding a meeting of the flood rehabilitation committee to draw up relief plans for the industrial sector.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said she was sorry for her failure to prevent Nava Nakorn Industrial Estate from being flooded despite the utmost prevention efforts. Due to the high tide and continuous downpours, the water rose and destroyed the embankments, making them unable to hold floodwater anymore.

The Prime Minister said officials involved were cooperating in expediting the evacuation of Nava Nakorn residents to safe grounds while machineries will be restored later on. In today's meeting of the flood rehabilitation committee, related agencies are invited to jointly lay down measures to assist the industrial sector. Assistance is expected to be divided into two categories - affected industries with and without insurance coverage.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the flood protection scheme for Bangkok, especially in Don Mueang and Sai Mai areas, will be carried out with maximum efforts. She added that the flood water will be diverted to the least afftected areas. Nonetheless, people are requested to give cooperation by protecting and reinforcing embankments. Meanwhile, the government will quickly rehabilitate and take care of citizens, industrial factory owners and small entrepreneurs who are affected by the deluge. However, the prime minister refused to answer the question of whether the Chulalonkorn sluice gate will be opened or not.

......"the flood water will be diverted to the least affected areas" = areas where the least important people live.

...."the prime minister refused to answer the question of whether the Chulalonkorn sluice gate will be opened or not" = she hasn't as clue as to what's actually happening, but then who does?

I've read the stories and seen the illustrations about how Bangkok is protected by a "flood wall" system of raised road beds, etc. As I know it, Viphavadi Rangsit is flat all the way from Din Daeng to Nava Nakorn. Where does this flood wall cross Viphavadi Rangsit? Which roads exactly make up the flood wall? What is to stop the water from flowing down the road into the city?

Since it is going to take months to fully drain Ayutthaya, and there are higher tides coming at the end of this month, I foresee that this is far from over and that Bangkok is far from safe.

2nd flood barrier at Navanakorn Industrial Park repaired but evacuation still continues; warnings about flood water being contaminated /

Contaminated with what?

Crocodiles, amongst other things.

ThB 1,000 reward each.

Don't all rush now...

No seriously, any idea what was being made in this park that would have people worried?

I dunno if this is why... But the news reports above said the flood waters at Nava Nakorn were pouring into the estate's sewage pond area.... Maybe little brown turtles???

Oh, that makes me feel much better- and I'm sure she will offer a sincere apology when Bangkok is a disaster area containing several million people.

I really would like to know though, exactly what are / where are Bangkok's defenses? I can't see any after Nava Nakorn.

PM regrets Nava Nakhon Industrial Estate cannot be protected from floodwaters, to rescue as soon as possible, pledges to fully protect Bangkok /MCOT

Well a few days ago she pledged and promised that this estate would not get flooded.

Even this morning, the science minister was confident that it would not flood:

"Science Minister Plodprasop confident Navanakorn won't flood because it's elevated; if it doesn't flood in 7 days, BKK will be safe /TAN_Network"

And yesterday Bangkok was safe and today maybe not...

I would'nt be surprised if this is the source that inspired Mr. Plodprasop to run for the job:

"Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies." (Groucho Marx)

It would help the government considerably if they can just appoint a single source of information. Instead, you have quotes from the PM, the Agricultural Minister, the Industrial Minister, and the Science Minister. Not a good thing to have in a crisis situation.

Don't forget that the PM's husband is now chiming in. to say the poll numbers continue to buoy her spirits. :bah:

Bangkok governor is from the "other" side so does not count.. And his job hangs in the balance if BKK gets flooded so i would not be surprised if it was partially flooded then the PT can blame him.

Actually according to another thread a lot of the blame can be placed on Barnhan Silpa Acha (aka slippery eel) as he was the prime minister that vetoed 5.2 metre flood walls for the 2.5 metre one's Bkk hs today.

On UK news tonight they did a report from Bangkok. They talked to various people and the UK reporter said that the Thai officials said they had been caught out by this sudden surge of water as they were not expecting it. Is this a face saving statement?

Don'y have a link but it was on ITV evening news at 6pm UK time

"Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra immediately said she was sorry that the government was unable to protect the industrial estate".

Don't worry!!!! Just think how proud this government is going to feel when it gets something right!!!

Might be a while off yet though as they seem to find it difficult to get anything right, such is the sheer incompetence of her so-called ministers!!!!.

Honestly Guys, have a real strong hard think about what you are writing, this country is going through really tough times doing their very best to protect their people and property, your sarcastic and somewhat unproductive remarks are not helping the situation where you seem to constantly bag the crap out of the Thai Government?

Have you not got any positive remarks! if you are not happy with being in Thailand, Go Home! and baqg your own politicians! leave these people who,s country it is to try and manage their own affairs!!

this petty rubbishing of :realangry: people and their efforts of trying to resolve their situation does not need your sarcasm, Get a life!! your type of comments are getting really boring and old!:realangry: :realangry: :realangry:

Oh right. And I haven't even mentioned the spokesperson(s) from FROC either. All we need now is for Jatuporn and Chalerm to have their say too and we'll be complete. I am surprised that those two managed to stay quiet for so long now given that they can't stand it when other people hog the limelight.

No wonder people in Bangkok are in a bit of a panic mode now...

It would be nice if they would provide maps of locations when writing these articles as they do in Western publications, but I guess the local logic ( ) is that if you don't already know where something is, it should be of no interest to you!!

Perhaps you should be living someplace where the local logic is more in keeping with your standards?

I'm not rubbishing the Thai people at all despite your implication that I have done, so why do you accuse me of this!!! I have the utmost respect for Thai's and their way of life and am happy to live here - I do question their wisdom and judgement though!!!

It is the government (or what calls itself a government more precisely) that I'm haranguing - they are useless, pathetic, incompetent, unworthy and will turn out to be a complete catastrophy for the Thai people. I don't blame Yingluck entirely but she was stupid enough to listen to her brother in the end against her initial better instincts and judgement of showing reluctance to enter politics (at the very top) - just how crazy is that????

I'm afraid the misguided and uneducated Thai's to the North of the country have got us into the predicament that Thailand is in now. They are not only rudderless but leaderless as well, not exactly what is wanted at times of extreme emergency such as what "mother nature" has thrown at Thailand, is it!!!!!!.
