Just had an unpleasant experience with a Farang in Pattaya. I was in a rush and made a U-Turn which caused this guy who was speeding up the middle lane to brake hard. No excuses on my part I should have been more careful. After turning I continued in the middle land and the guy overtook me on the right. As soon as he passed me, he swung his car into my car, I braked hard but could not avoid a collision and my front right side wing was hit by his left back bumper. A real passive aggressive type, he remained calm as hell while I berated him for hitting my car. We went to the police station with the insurance guy but gave up waiting. We agreed to a 50/50 responsibility to the crash. I couldn't wait any longer as we had our niece and 4 dogs with us and I needed to get back home as our house in Pathumthani is at risk of flooding. A Farang bystander came to speak to us and his account of the incident matched mine. However, he wouldn't speak to the police for us. His reason: "I have a baby here so....". I do take some responsibility for this as I should have taken more care with the U-Turn but I am wondering whether anyone else has had run ins with this guy (a Luxembourger). Or is Pattaya full of people like this.

Pattaya is full of all types - mostly examples of the worst though (regardless of Nationality), that is, except for the upstanding expats that frequent this board and feel I've just marginalized them of course :)

Could happen anywhere unfortunately

Could happen anywhere unfortunately

Yes it could, LA for example, or perhaps NY, or any major Australian city, or Perhaps in Taipei, but in non-special-administrative areas of Thailand it's pretty rare ;)

I do not disagree with your view on Thailand MRO. In my limited (compared to yours) experience I think the Thai's are much more relaxed (culture I guess and as a lot of them pull all sorts of stunts so they are more used to it maybe) but unless the foreigner has adapted it can be a challenge.

Unfortunately so called road rage has been an issue in the UK for years with many press reports of people being forced over and then confronted with fists/knives/baseball bats etc. - and that's all over not just in big cities.

What I have not heard before is someone deliberately damaging their own vehicle (was it hired?) and then not being aggressive about it - sounds like the OP could have been lucky it was not worse - unless he is VERY big

I was in a rush. Why.?..Was he speeding . ? . You did the U turn..Are you a Whingin Pom . no one got hurt , foreget it.

Your lucky he didn't broadside you while you were turning in front of him. How do you know he was speeding, or is that to make it sound less your fault. If you didn't see him and pulled out in front of him, how then do you know how fast he was going?

I'm not condoning his actions, but you should be grateful your still here pal.

I would wager that the farang guy thought you were ma & Pa Thai and could show his macho side BUT came unstuck and is now sulking.

You made a mistake, ;) but EVERY day here l experience what you did and it is expected and tolerated by the natives.

Did the guy have a shaved head and tattoo's ?. :D

Ah, wasn't me! I have not left BKK since returning from CM on the 4th of last month. But I will be in Pattaya on the 5th for the Jester's 15th and the OP had better be careful who he pulls in front of then....:) Just kidding, I'm too old for that kind of fun anymore.

At that U-Turn you have to go into the middle lane. Its just too tight. And the traffic wasn't speeding. He was.

Hey guys he admitted he was wrong and no one is perfect - there is no excuse if the other guy deliberately tried to swat his car. Why is neither here nor there as long as the OP learns from it.

I would guess the average turning radius of most cars is between 5 - 5.5 meters which is probably about one lane width so pretty much impossible to make a U turn and make the inside lane. Of course if he was on a motorcycle it would be a different story. ;)
