Makro keeps all branches open

The Nation

Siam Makro Plc, the operator of Makro cash-and-carry stores, keeps open all stores nationwide including those in flooded areas plus control on selling prices and goods hoarding.

"Our staff is dedicated to alleviating our members' hardship. As our customers desperately need consumption goods but are reluctant to travel the flooded distance to buy goods. We try all possible means to meet their demands," said Pariyanuch Na Taguatung, Marketing Director of Siam Makro.

Consumer and consumption goods in high demand during the current flood crisis include drinking water, canned fish, instant noodles, rice, eggs, flashlights, batteries, trash bags, toilet paper, mosquito repellants, water filters, and car cover sheets.

Like other modern retailers, Siam Makro witnesses shortage of some items because of disrupted or delayed transportation, abnormally high demand particularly for instant noodles, canned sardines, rice, eggs, flashlights (only in Bangkok stores), and disruption in production of factories in flooded areas.

"Makro coordinates closely with manufacturers and suppliers to ensure goods are delivered directly to wholesale stores and to secure additional goods from local manufacturers," said Pariyanuch.

The company now operates temporary distribution centres in Chon Buri, and Pak Chong of Nakhon Ratchasima to meet growing demands. Priority is placed on stores in flood-ravaged areas, such as Ayuthaya, Nakhon Sawan, and Lop Buri, including Bangkok.

In an effort to aid flood victims since August, MAKRO has joined hands with members to donate funds and supplies worth more than four million baht. The joint volunteer service includes provision of life support bags and cooking fresh food for flood victims, and assisting Flood Relief Operations Centre of the Prime Minister's Office with life support supply management. For every purchase receipt during Oct 20-Nov 20, Makro will contribute Bt1 to a flood relief donation programme.
