BANGKOK, Nov 10 - Japanese automaker Toyota Motor says it will resume production in Thailand Nov 21, one month after severe flooding forced it to suspend operations, Japan’s NHK reported Thursday.

Toyota’s three plants in Thailand’s Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao provinces, unaffected directly by the flooding, halted production Oct 10 due to supply chain disruptions after flooding hit industrial estates in Thailand’s central provinces.

Toyota also downsized its output in Japan, North America and other Southeast Asian nations.

The company is confident that parts can be supplied but it has not yet decided whether to resume production at all three plants, which have total production capacity of 650,000 units per year.

Toyata Motor Thailand Co., Ltd. has 13,500 employees with registered capital of Bt7.5 billion.

Toyota has already decided to continue the output cut at its Japan-based plants until Nov 18. It will also downsize production through this week at plants in other countries except Thailand, NHK reports

Two other Japanese automakers, Nissan Motor and Mazda Motor, have also decided to resume production of some models in Thailand. (MCOT online news)
Good news. If other large manufacturers can rebound this quickly then its good for Thailand, good for the workers and good for Toyota.
You did notice the part that said that these factories were not flooded, but ceased production due to supply line problems.

Unfortunately, the factories that flooded will not be able to recover so quickly. But, at least it is a start.

Toyota, Mitsubishi to resume Thailand production

TOKYO, November 10, 2011 (AFP) - Japanese auto giants Toyota and Mitsubishi Motor have said they will resume production in Thailand after the country's flood disaster closed factories for more than a month.

Toyota said it would resume production from November 21 at its three Thai plants, which were forced to halt operations on October 10.

The closures triggered a shortage of parts at home, in Asia and as far away as North America and South Africa.

"Toyota is starting to get a firm grasp of the situation and would like to restart production as soon as possible so as to restore normalcy to those affected," company president Akio Toyoda said in a statement late Wednesday.

Toyota, which has held off issuing its full-year earnings forecast as it assesses the impact of the floods, has been forced to close some operations in Asia, the United States, Canada and South Africa due to a lack of supplies.

It has said it will resume normal production in North America next week.

Toyoda said despite the problems caused by the flooding the company had no plans to leave Thailand. "Toyota is not considering shrinking its operations here. If anything, we would expand," he said.

Fellow automotive giant Mitsubishi said Thursday it would restart production at its Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand from Monday, after the plant closed on October 13 due to a lack of parts from flood-hit suppliers.

Suppliers were steadily recovering, "enough so that parts needed for its models produced at the Laem Chabang Plant are now available again", the company said.

"More time will be necessary for (Mitsubishi's) supply chain to recover completely due to the devastating impact of the massive flooding on suppliers in Thailand," it said.

"However, (the company) and its partners together will continue to put their best efforts towards resuming normal production levels at the Laem Chabang plant," it said.
