Hello,

I live in Chiang Mai and am returning to Scotland soon. I would like to take my two cats with me, but the whole process seems so complicated. And is made even worse at this end where nobody really seems to know anything!

I have read all the bumf on the defra website, and understand that they will not have to stay in quarantine after the turn of the year, given that they have a microchip, rabies vaccination, and a blood test from an approved lab. Given that there are no approved labs in Thailand, this means that the blood sample will have to be sent outside the country, and stamped by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Does anyone have any experience doing this that they can share with me? Can anyone recommend a vet in Chiang Mai that actually knows the process and can help us through it? Even phoning the Ministry of Agriculture was fruitless, they basically told us to phone Suvanaphumi airport, who in turn told us to phone defra.

Please help!

Thanks in advance!

Phoned them already, and had "help" practically barked at me. Perhaps the call centres were moved to India for more than economic reasons?

The problem is at this end (Thailand). Nobody seems to really know anything about it.

Cheers anyway.

Hi there, I have just posted a similar post but in regards to my dogs :) I will be heading to the north of england, or maybe glasgow so if I find our anything I will be sure to pass on details, and if possible could you let me know also?

I am in Chiang Mai at the moment, but we might drive down to bangkok a few days before we leave to back to the uk - so would be interested in vets also!

I found a vet who works at an animal hospital near the old carrefour (now big c) on the big doi saket road (its next door to a dunlop shop)

she quoted me 500 bt for a micro chip, and a whopping 10,000bt for each of my dogs blood tests, injections etc (obviously she is ripping me off so I need to go back and tell her its more than 50% less than than that!)

I've replied to your 'dog' thread but have to add that last year I was looking at moving to Finland with my dogs. Fortunately I have family there and as Finland already has rabies - they allow pets as long as they have all the necessary certification.

It cost around 10,000 baht for each of my dogs.

I was lucky and after spending all that money - was able to stay in Thailand.

Not sure what the 10k stands for but ....

FACTS:

drawing blood and made into serum: 300 baht

sending by EMS to a registered lab in Belgium: 990 baht

costs of registered lab in Belgium for serological Rabies testing paid by either bank transfer or visa card: 50 euro. (Approx 2,100 baht)

Total per animal: approx. 3390 baht

Good luck with getting your money back, in case you paid that fee.

phew ...I didnt pay her anything, as I just popped into enquire, I had a feeling it was not right, but good job we are doing our research as she would have made a nice little profit there! ;)

I would give Thong Lor Pet Hospital a call, most of their vets speak good english and they maybe able to help and advise you.

They are quite expensive (i use them for all my animals) but i trust them, they know what they are doing and i'm pretty sure that the microchip and blood work will come in under 10k.

I'm due there on Sunday to take my puppy down to start his vaccinations, i will ask whilst i am there, as i also want to know whats involved and 'how to do it'
