PUBLIC HEALTH MINISTRY HAS DISPATCHED 6 MOBILE MEDICAL UNITS INTO PRACHUAPKIRIKAN TO ASSIST FLOOD-STRICKEN PEOPLE

The Public Health Ministry has sent 6 additional mobile medical units into upper Southern province of PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, in the effort to rapidly assist more than 10,000 families affected by the flood.

THAPSAKAE (ทับสะแก) hospital has been designated as the centre for patient transfers, while BANG SAPHAN (บางสะพาน) hospital remained closed due to the minimum estimated 10 milion baht incurred from flood damages.

The provincial Public Health office has reserved 20,000 sets of 'flood medicine sets'. 3 mobile medical units have set up camps at 3 sites -- 2 of them were on patrol to areas with remaining floodwater while the other remained en route.

On Saturday (Nov 19), more than 100 people came to receive their medical service at the mobile units, mostly for flu and headaches.

Heavy rain, waves strands thousands of tourists on Koh Tao Island

SURAT THANI: -- Heavy rains and strong waves have stranded hundreds of tourists on Koh Tao Island in the Southern province of Surat Thani, while the famed signature treeline of 9km-long Samila beach in Songkhla was devastated by gale-force winds which flattened the scenic Gulf of Thailand landmark.

Three consecutive days of heavy rains and 3-5 metre waves in Surat Thani forced the small pleasure craft and fishing boats which normally serve Koh Tao Island to stay ashore. Provincial authorities and other

agencies are evacuating thousands of tourists by boat to ferry thousands of tourists back from the island.

However, Surat Thani provincial governor Vijit Vichaisarn said that ferries and cruise ships between Koh Samui and the Koh Phangan Islands are still providing service as usual.

Further south in Songkhla municipality, strong winds with wave heights of 2-3 metres, moved inland from the Gulf of Thailand and struck down trees along the scenic 9km Samila beach. Municipal authorities are

assessing the damage.

The Meteorological Department office in Songkhla province said that due to continuing storms, strong winds and waves in Gulf of Thailand, heavy rains will continue in some locations of Pattalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat.

However, in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumporn, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, the rain will begin to stop. The authoriities still urge local residents to be on alert for possible flash floods.

Five dead, three missing as flood hits Prachuap Khiri Khan

BANGKOK: -- Five people were reported dead and three are missing in this southern province which has been hit hard by flash floods since Saturday.

Interior Minister Air Chief Marshal Kongsak Wanthana, Monday inspected damage in Bang Saphan district, the worst-hit area after flash floods wrought havoc since Saturday. Provincial authorities will allocate

emergency assistance worth Bt50 million (US$1.25 million) to deliver food and other necessities to flood victims.

The minister presented cash to relatives of the dead and other flood victims. He also inspected the damaged Klong Loy reservoir in Ron Thong subdistrict which recently overflowed and inundated several districts.

Describing it as the worst natural calamity in 50 years, ACM Kongsak urged government agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning to prepare a long-term plan to reduce the effect of floods in the future.

Meanwhile, Provincial Electricity Authority governor Pracherd Sook-kaew said that only 20 per cent of Bang Saphan district is still without electricity as some areas are still under water. Service was expected to resume Monday, if there are no more heavy downpours.

DEPUTY INTERIOR MINISTER SERMSAK TO REQUEST BUDGET FROM THE CABINET FOR ASSISTING FLOOD-HIT VICTIMS IN PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN

Deputy Minister of Interior SERMSAK PONGPANIT (เสริมศักดิ์ พงษ์พานิช) will examine the flood disasters in PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN (ประจวบคีรีขันธ์) Province today so that he can request more financial resources to help those affected. The budget will be allocated for building houses and restoring damaged roads.

Mr. SERMSAK said the assessment shows that BANGSAPHAN (บางสะพาน) District of PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN has the most damaged area, especially in KLONGLOY (คลองลอย) Village.

At the mobile Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister THAKSIN SHINAWATRA has already approved the project of constructing a water reservoir at BANGSAPHAN District as an attempt to tackle flood problems in the future. The Deputy Minister of Interior said the project will take place soon.

NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT MINISTER ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL MAKE A PROSECUTION WITH OFFICIALS WHOM NEGLECT THEIR DUTIES

Natural Resources and Environment Minister YONGYUT TIYAPAIRAT (ยงยุทธ ติยะไพรัช) made an announcement that he will prosecute officers who neglect their duties. Meanwhile, all Natural Resources and Environment officers nationwide have been called upon to attend a meeting on December 15th.

Referring to the flood situation in PRACHUAP KHIRIKHAN (ประจวบคีรีขันธ์) Province, Mr. YONGYUT said the state sectors have to revise the provincial planning, the preventive measures, and the warning system. He also revealed that the reservoir in BANG SAPHAN (บางสะพาน) District was damaged because of its faulty structure, while logs and other debris also helped augment the reservoir’s demolition.

Related officials have been assigned to examine the facts. If the damage originated from officials’ negligence, then they will be punished accordingly.

INTERIOR MINISTER INSISTED THAT PEOPLE IN PRACHUAB KIRIKHAN WERE WARNED BEFORE THE FLOODING

Interior Minister Air Chief Marshall Kongsak Wantana (คงศักดิ์ วันทนา) insisted that the people in Prachuab Kirikhan (ประจวบคีรีขันธ์) were warned of possible flooding before it happened. Air Chief Marshall Kongsak said that the Inteiror Ministry has warned the Bang Sa Pan (บางสะพาน) district of possible flooding, before the natural disaster happened. He said that there was more water than expected and some people did not believe in the officials’ warnings and worried about their properties, leading to some deaths in the incident.

The Interior Minister said that the Minsitry will communicate with the people more so that the people will understand the situation, making its warnings more credible, after the Prime Minister criticized the Interior Ministry during the cabinet meeting yesterday. The Interior Minister added that governors in the northern and northeastern provinces have been ordered to visit villages to establish demands for blankets, as the temperature in upper Thailand is steadily decreasing.

He said that the governors can use the budgets from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department to assist the people immediately, adding that he will visit the regions on next Monday.

CHUMPORN AND PRACHUAB KIRIKHAN PROVINCES HAVE BEEN ASKED TO SUBMIT PLANS ON FLOOD PREVENTION TO THE DEPT OF DISASTER PREVENTION AND MITIGATION

Director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Anucha Mokkawait (อนุชา โมกขะเวส ) said that the department has coordinated with related agencies in Chumporn and Prachuab Kirikhan in assisting villagers affected by the flash flood last week. Mr. Anucha revealed that heavy rains had caused flash floods in 6 districts of the two provinces, affecting 60,341 people and causing damages to 52 roads and 4 bridges. He said that the department has coordinated with the provincial administrations to aid the flood victims within 7 days, adding that the roads and bridges will be repaired as soon as possible.

As for long-term measures, Mr. Anucha said that a committee has been established to survey locations for dams and roads as well as other constructions that obstruct the flows of water, so that water can be released more quickly. He said that the department asked the provinces to submit the projects within November, so that the proposals can be submitted to the cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Yongyuth Tiyapairat (ยงยุทธ ติยะไพรัช) said that the government has to review its city planning, preventive measures for forest encroachments, and set up disaster prevention for the people.

Six southern provinces warned of torrential rain and flash floods

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's six southern provinces may face torrential rain with flash floods in some areas over the next couple of days, according to the Meteorological Department.

The weather bureau warned on Tuesday that local residents in the provinces should be well aware and prepared for the torrential rain and flash floods, caused by a low pressure range from Malaysia.

The six southern provinces include Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phattalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

"People in the provinces should prevent themselves and their properties from the possible torrential rain and flash floods during November 23-25", the Meteorological Department warned in a statement released to the local media.

Been away for awhile but the last email i got from thaivisa with a goverment weather warning was the big floods in BKK that cost the goverment millions, think they are still waiting for it to happen

Depends what paper you read or what news you watch - Went home to Nonthaburi on the weekend and the river is right up, so much so that when the tide comes in a lot of the houses along the river are experiencing flooding right at this moment.
