1.whatever they claim or promise, there is not ANY bus going over the border. You always change.

2.this site has the best and uptodate info on all normal borderposts TH-KH and connections both sides: talesofasia.com. If you had taken that tiny trouble to tell where Det udom is situated-you cannot expect anyone to know any minor Thai village-a better answer might have fortcomen. And also tell if Snooky would be the only wanted place to visit in Khmerland.

3. your idea to avoid BKK is just the usual TV-ignorance parrot. WHY? Becse the FAST express buses all only run to/fro BKK-and you do not even need to change busstations. Plus you can then avail of the nightbuses for longer diatance. You now face much longer trips with more changes in local fan-buses.

4. from Sih to BKK-dead easy and not even need to ask, as ANY place in Sih will sell the tickets and have the info. Khmer (mini)bus to border-beyond Trat-then minibus Trat and choice of many buses to BKK-choice of Swampy, Mochit or Ekamai/BTS. Paying separately is cheaper and offers more choice nas the fearful all-in packets for anxious 1st-timers.

If you wish to bus all the way,First you will need to bus to Poipet then spend the night and get one of the morning buses to PP (8 hours if your lucky ,10 if your not).

Because the bus gets into PP late you will need to spend a night in PP and get the morning bus to Snooky.(4 hours).

Alternatively , if you get to Poipet early in the day you could get a seat in a shared taxi to PP (price depends on which seat you want, front seat to yourself about 1000 baht ,about 6 hours).

Not sure what time the last bus leaves for Snooky but the taxis will drop you where you want to go so its possible to get to Snooky in the one day.

Taxi from PP to Snooky about $50.

I do know where Det Udom is. I live in amphur Kantaralak and have roughed it (and smoothed it) to Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville a few times in the last 5 years.

If you are the adventurous type and have some Thai (or you are one of these lucky types who can blag their way around the world with no languages) then go through one of the borders in neighbouring SiSaket (Choam SaNgam) or Surin (Chong Chom). Choam Sa N'gam is just short of 2 hours drive from Det, so if you have a friend/relative who can drop you at the border that helps massively, but assuming not here is the route:

Local bus to Kantaralak. Local bus to Khun Han (or through to Phusing, but these are infrequent). Songtaew to Phusing. Motorbike or private hire songthaew from Khun Han or Phusing to Choam SaNgam border. Phew, you have broken the back of this journey and you've only done 150 kilos! If you are a really confident traveller then get one of the express buses from Det to Bangkok to drop you off on Highway 24 where the road turns off to Choam SaNgam and ask around for a local who will drive you the last 30k to the border; that could be quite quick.

If you want to do this trip on a budget then you need to get through the border before it closes (probably around 6pm) and hire a motorbike taxi for the 15k into Anlong Veng; they will try to rip you off for $10 but stand firm at $5 (I'm sure they would do it for less but $5 is fair). Stop the night in Anlong Veng (there's a very acceptable guest house that everyone knows) and get the early bus to Siem Reap. I believe that buses only go early in the morning. Alternatively hire a taxi at the border direct to Siem Reap - pay no more than $50 and get to Siem Reap in 2 hours without stopping overnight.

Tuk tuk from wherever the bus or taxi drops you in Siem Reap to the SR express bus station on the eastern edge of town. Express coaches are available infrequently through to Sihanoukville (an overnighter and a day coach I think); they go through PP anyway, so you are not losing much if you need to get a coach from SR to PP and then another form PP to Sv. Coaches on both of these routes are frequent (until 2pm going to PP and until 4pm from PP to SR).

It is possible to get to Sv from Det for as little as $75 using that itinerary ($100 if using the taxi from the border to SR) and it's a great backpacker-type experience. The alternatives are:

1. Someone comes on this thread and gives you the route to the Chong Chom border south of Surin and connecting travel details to Siem Reap. That border is also 30k south of highway 24 and you could get off a Det to Bangkok express bus at Prasat and find a motorbike or private songthaew (there may be a public one) to this more heavily trafficked border. I don't know about public transport from Chong Chom to SR.

2. Express bus to Bangkok from Det; express bus from Bangkok to border at Poipet, then express bus(es) to SR, PP and Sv. Probably no more expensive than using the Issaan borders but one hell of a lot more boring and still needing at least 2 days.

3. Air Asia from Ubon to Swampy and Air Asia (or, 20% more expensive but a more frequrent schedule, Bangkok Airways) to PP. [You cannot get back from PP to Ubon in the same day using AA for both legs so you need to stop in Bangkok or use Bangkok Airways]. Express bus to Sv. Return costs are about 3,700 baht to Swampy and 8,000-10,000 baht to PP from Swampy. Travel time from Det to Sv could be as little as 14 hours using Bangkok Airways.

You pays your money and you takes your choices. 2 full days (maybe plus) and about $150 to $200 return using bus/taxis etc. 1 day and about $400 if flying. I would take a middle ground and taxi it (hiring a mate or family to the border at Choam SaN'gam) all the way to SR and use the cheap Cambodian express buses thereafter. I would also stop a day in SR and look at Angkor Wat if you have not been before. Taxis will be offered to you at the border in very broken English

Not sure what time the last bus leaves for Snooky .........

2:45 according to the useful travel guide canbypublications.com, but I have a feeling that an early evening service started earlier this year. OP could post a question on khmer440, a Cambodian expat's website.

This is nonsense-the FAST route from BKK to Sihv is: bus to Trat (from both Mochit or Ekamai-hence my hint that BKK would not be sp much a deared hassle)-minibus to border, then choice of motosai/van to KohKong-or even on to Sih v by now.

IYF starting by nightbus from Det: arr BKK morning, trat by noon, Koh Kong-by 15.00=too late for onward, stay overnight. As would have been dead easy to read on talesofasia.com.

IF using daytime bus from Det: nightbus BKK-TRat (just 5 hrs=not that long), arr border plenty of time for 8.00 bus to either PnPn or Sihv.

Total cost-as we do THB here: 5/600 for Det-BKK-250/300 for BKK-Tr, 120 mini to border, any amount (less as 10US$) for Khmer side. An awful lot lower, lewss as half, as that quoted adventure price! Total time, whatever you start, like 22-24 hrs.

A cut off by using the Khorat (or Buriram) bus toward Chantaburi and change again is feasible, but wont save much time, nor money and these buses are often very overcrowded=you stand. None of that for the BKk buses.
