Hello,

I'm a US tourist booked on flights to/from Thailand for 14 days, leaving in 10 days. I would like to extend my visit to greater than 30 days. I am switching US employers and am working to confirm my start date (e.g., Thai visit duration 28 or 35 days). What is my best option? If I extend departure date to >30 duration before leaving do I need a 60 day tourist visa to travel? Do I have enough time to safely get 60 day tourist visa? Can I request extension to visa on arrival stamp +7 days or leave country to extend trip?

With a return flight later than 30 days from arrival in Thailand you should get a single-entry tourist visa. The consulate where you plan to apply can tell you how fast they issue it.

If you fly to Thailand without visa but with a return ticket within 30 days from arrival you can get a 7-day extension of stay at any immigration office in Thailand for 1,900 Baht and confirmation of a flight out of Thailand within this extension period. Take a passport photo along, too, and photocopies of the ID page of your passport, the page with your arrival stamp and the departure card, both sides.

With a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days of arrival you would have no problem coming over without a visa. You would be allowed to stay for up to 30 days, and might be able to extend for another 7 days maximum on show of a ticket out of the country within those extra 7 days. Or leave the country and retrn by land for another 15 days.

However, if you intend to only stay in Thailand it might be easier to just get a tourist visa, good for 60 days. The tourist visa costs money, but saves the cost of traveling for a brder run or an extension of stay.

I agree with that, but, you might find a visa run interesting. You might enjoy a couple of days in Laos or Cambodia or Malaysia.

You can get a tourist visa via fedex or dhl in a couple of days, Recent reports indicate the the Honorary Thai Consulates in Houston and Portland are very cooperative. The cost is $40 per entry, it''s cheaper than a 7 day extension and your travel time is fully covered.

Thank you for the helpful information. I am checking my options. I am in Houston. I will check with Houston consulate regarding timing to get a tourist visa before I leave.

I dropped off the application at Houston consulate this afternoon. The consulate were very helpful and organized. They said I can pickup the visa tomorrow afternoon, so turn around time ~24 hours in person. Thanks again for the information.

Have a nice trip, and enjoy your vacation in Thailand!
