Taxes And Service Fees 17.7

I am seeing a lot of hotels list 17.7 % for taxes and fees. I don't remember numbers like that in past years. Are they all just posting low room rates, then at the end sticker surprise you with an 17.7% charge? They seem to be encouraging me to go to the smaller locally owned places.

Always been the same here, just some already included it in the price. Its the same with the large booking web sites some are total price and some you need to add ++

It was always 10% service charge plus 7% VAT. Not sure that adds up to 17.7% though ....

It does if you include the 7% VAT on the service charge. Thus 1000 baht +10% service charge equals 1100 baht. Now add 7% to that amount and it comes to 1177 baht...

I learned math in grade school so the service charges/taxes don't surprise/confuse me.
