I have resided in an apartment block in bangkok for 2 years. Earlier this week, I was stopped at the main door by the comlex manager who informed me that the (Muslim) owner has passed a ruling that alchohol was now not allowed to brought into the building. I informed him that this was not on my room rental contract and that I will not let him dictate to me what i should do regarding this.

any suggestions?.........Do i go to the police? Is this legal.......I know this is Thailand and they make the rules up as they go along and is wrong........can they do this?

If not detailed in the contract as a condition of rental then they cant enforce anything on you, if they carry on pushing it get a lawyer to send them a letter.

Technically they would be in breach of contract and you could walk out on the lease without being penalised ie lose of deposit etc

Personal I would have some fun with this Muppet! This, for me is not about race or religion; I wouldn't be able to help myself from kicking back at the arrogance of this landlord. I would wind this guy up no end…..How, I'm sure you could come up with some amusing ways.…have fun.

For starters ask for it in writing, as it is a proposed change of contract? Then as they say "up to you".

It all depends how fanatical the owners are. I wouldnt taunt them or wind the up as some suggest as some of these guys feel very strongly about their religion.

If it was me I would type out a letter giving notice to break the lease and move on , you certainly have strong grounds to do so.

But in this case they do appear to own the property the o/p is living in. If I was the o/p and didn't agree with the hospitality I'd move.

I stayed in a hotel in India, earlier this year, that has the same rule.

I even had to sign a special column in the register acknowledging the rule.

Then I carried my bags upstairs, including booze, and made sure it was out of sight

when the room was cleaned.

I think it's a little different if the rule is already in place before you move in, but yeah, sneaking it in should work.

Other than that just tell them to piss-off.

Tell the complex-manager that you understand the owner's point-of-view, and that in future you will be discrete, about bringing alcohol into your home & consuming it there, so as not to offend his religious-principles, and that you trust he will show similar tolerance for your religion ?

I think that I would start carrying in four or five nice overly ripe durian everyday. Maybe even have the vendor show up in front of your building and cut them open for you before you carry then to your apartment.

First off, somebody telling me I can't do something ridiculous as the OP has, makes me want to do exactly that. But, that is just me.

With that out of the way, what are the options?

1. Move. Personally, if a Muslim bought an apartment or condo building I was renting, I wouldn't give him/them a single penny.

2. Do some research. Is the owner Thai? Foreign Corp.? Is what the owner wants to do even legal in Thailand? I mean I've heard of some strange things here, but never that. The request sounds really bizarre considering the town. A lease agreement may or may not be binding in the case of a change in owners. Need some condo property owners to quote from real estate laws in Thailand.

3. Move anyway. If the owner is successful with the request, how does that effect the rest of the tenants? Does it bring more Muslim tenants? Are other people moving out?

4. Move quicker. Won't really matter. The owner will probably try to make your stay miserable, especially if the majority of rooms are vacant. Upkeep of the building will go downhill. Why should he care if you drink in your room? Unrealistic codes for an unrealistic people.

How much time before your lease is up? Sneaking in booze is your only prospect, unless you're like me and will call Heineken to stop by with about 50 cases, just to see the doorman and owner turn different colors.

I rent in Thailand. You never know when the nice neighborhood you though you were living in goes to hell. Pick up the pieces and move elsewhere.

If the landlord owns the building, I guess he can change the contracts, but must probably give some notice, depending upon the contracts.

OP should dispute it until the new contract is handed out. In the meantime, OP should look for a new place to live.
