Do Thai Citizens Need A Passport For Malaysia ?

Recommended Posts

Do Thai citizens need a passport for Malaysia ? (For a quick one-day shopping trip to Padang Besar/Malaysia.) Or is a border pass sufficient for this trip ?

And as this is the "question hour", is it possible for a Thai citizen (19), who lives in Hat Yai to get his (first) passport there, or does he have to go to Bangkok for the application ?

Hi,

Border Pass is only issued to those residents (as stated in your ID), staying

in " border states " with Malaysia. States like Santun; Songhkla; Yala;

and Narithiwat. Valid for 7 days as also vice versa for Malaysian border residents.

Other than that you need an International Passport.

As I understand that you are resident in Hatyai..... try visiting Danok/Bukit Kayu Hitam border town.

There is a Malaysian duty free complex just a short distance away from the Thai Immigration check point.

You are in Malaysian territory (duty free complex)..... but however you have not reach the Malaysian

Immigration check point yet which is about a few hundred yards away. I have seen many Khon Thai who

just walk over to the Malaysian duty free complex, bought some duty free goods, and then walk back

to Danok . The question whether they have did use a border pass, or a pass port or none at all at the Thai side.....

I really don't know. Next time when I go there, I will ask them.

Have a nice trip.

It has nothing to do with the Malaysian consulate in Songkhla.

For Thai nationals who are eligible, the Thai Immigration will

issue the border pass. Same with Malaysian nationals who are eligible,

the Malaysian Immigration will issue the border pass. This special

Thai/Malaysia border pass arrangement/agreement has been going on

for more than fifty years. As I have said..... only to Thai and

Malaysian nationals who are residing in bordering states.

That is correct.

Thai nationals with passports are given thirty days visa on arrival.

Same procedure for Malaysian passport holders...... they are also

given thirty days visa on arrival in Thailand.

However, for 'border pass' holders (Malaysia & Thai Nationals),

they will be given only seven days visa on arrival.

They will stamp that visa on the ' border pass '.

By the way, a border pass is just a piece of paper

with my colour photo and my personal particulars.

My Malaysian border pass is valid for six months...... but however,

when I go in, they will stamp in a visa only for seven days.

In other words, I can do a visa run every seven days, if I want to.

If I want to stay longer, I use my Malaysian passport..... and I

will be given a thirty days visa on arrival at the border.

Mai mee pan ha ! Sawatdi krap !

My Thai girlfriend and I live in Phuket. I need to go down to Pinang, Malaysia to apply for a 1 year visa. She has a passport, but expired. As she is not from one of the neighbouring provinces to Malayia, does that mean she can't come with me to Pinang on a Border Pass? I guess I'd have to stay a couple of days there while waiting for the Thai embassy to do their paperwork...So 1 day permit wouldn't be enough..

Phuket is not situated next to the Malaysian border.

She needs a passport..... and she will be given a

thirty days visa on arrival at the border.

By the way, there is no such thing as a 'one day' permit.

Have a pleasant trip. Sawatdi krap !

Hi ArLim,

Additional info for you.

As an Hatyai resident, you are eligible for a 'border pass' but

only to border states/towns next to Thailand. If you travel far and beyond

the border states..... then you are travelling at your own risk.

The reasons are obvious. If you are caught by Malaysian police, immigration and

other law enforcement agencies or when you register yourself at the hotel.....

you may be arrested and charged for immigration offences. Always remember, a

border pass is only meant for border towns/states visits and not beyond. I have

known some Thai friends who use their border pass to travel right up to Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands. As I have said, they are travelling at their own risk. Play safe and have a pleasant trip. Sawatdi Krap !

There is a full service passport office in Songkhla. Very quick, not busy. It is possible to apply for new passports there as well as renew expired ones. If the passport is expired less than 6 months apparently it can be done at the Post Office. The passport office used to be in Hat Yai but I have heard it has since been moved to Songkhla, probably at the Provincial Offices.
